Haggy for Prime Minister!!!!!!!

Well actually it would not be an unreasonable idea to put someone forward for local Govt. after all anyone (Pauline Hanson) can get elected. I'm sure that if the will was there we could pursue this, there are enough members to put together the finances necessary, and i'm sure there is someone here that has the brains and cunning to be a politician.
Nice work haggy! A very constructive contribution, nice use of the traffic death statistic and well done ramming down that plug for the worlds. Also props to leadfoot for the further comment

I have a scratchy recording so will try to upload it today
Jeez that woman that got on was a bit of a stretch. Said a skateboarder did $7000 worth of damage to her car without mentioning who hit who. Than pulls out the big guns while beginning to cry and says she has an 18month old baby who could have been in the car but wasn't. She was trying to insinuate that skateboarders are all potential baby killers while not being too concerned about the poor skateboarder who broke his neck when she ran into him with her car.
Cool - good to hear it sounded ok.

In the next few months ASRA is going to ramp up its profile in media and with government.
We will be working hard to get as much exposure for ASRA and the sport leading up to Newton's Playground. NP is our shot at showcasing our sport and a chance to garner a great deal of attention and momentum going forward.
go guys, good effort, just good we got a bit of a say,and we have people like haggy to do the hard yards...
Haggy you were great man,... I kinda feel like I floundered around a bit with what I wanted to say.
As soon as I got off the phone I had a million well structured things I wished Id said. In my head of course.... duh.

And yeah Robbo,... she was crying about it huh?
Funny thing is the road she was talking about is probably going to be one of the legal roads.
And she said it was a 50k zone.
I bet she charged out of her driveway without looking. Driveways are the main reason I prefer the road to sidewalks.

One other thing,... roads are for transport,... not just cars. Roads have been around longer than cars.
I couldn't really justify it in my mind until i read this-

"Roads have been around longer than cars"

There's no logical reason why skateboarding, with appropriate safety equipment couldn't take part on roads where safe distances were kept and minimum speeds were met and maximum speeds not exceded (except by school kids in 40km zones ,). There is currently (as far as I'm aware) no minimum speed on normal roads...

Perhaps the use reflective stripping, or cycle/board lights could be used day and night - like motorcycles, then it might be possible.

Also, it's probably something that needs to be pushed federally. I remember back in the early 1990's, Hotted Up Cars, Body Building and Skateboarding were recognised by the Australia Council for Arts as qualifying for funding. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts (Peter Garrett) should be enlisted on our behalf ,)
good on ya haggy!
congratulations on the successful interview.
i totally agree with the lights at night thing because that just sounds like common sense.
all the other crap though, thats just BS
what about all those cars you see on the road without their headlights on? driven by those shady characters in their loud car.
ok i'm up for a protest on the Sunshine Coast if anyones up to it? Brisbane might be a bit of a stretch for me
and anything to encourage skating companies to bring out new safety items and lights to make them cheaper from competition. i'm all for that
so can we send the link of this forum to the government or something?
Reasons for riding at night.
Roads are actually less busy in the evening,... in fact the very early hours of the morning are the quietest. Its actually safer to ride at night on some streets. As skaters we dont generally try to ride in built up traffic on the road. We have a heathy respect for cars. As a choice, we would choose a quiet back street in the day as well as night.

Sidewalks
Sidewalks are more dangerous. Apart from being a more confined space there are many obstacles. Telegraph poles, gaps in concrete, rocks and debris, cars entering and exiting driveways. If you are on the road you are less likely to be cut off by a car as long as he sees you and isnt the sort of driver that wants you to crash because they think they own the road. (Id say there are a large percentage of motorists with a vigilante complex when they are in their car)
The other obvious reason to stay off the sidewalk is pedestrians. Pedestrians dont like bikes on the sidewalk or anyone else who isnt walking. We choose to take the road as a courtesy to pedestrians, and we choose to ride with cars because it is unlikely we will hurt a car. Besides the law says bikes should be ridden on the road, so why should we be any different? The logic behind that law is well thought out,... the logic behind us being on sidewalks goes against that logic.

Police enforcement
Apart from the police having stretched rescources, by allowing this rule we would be giving police the right to harass young people. As it is the police already do harass the under 25s,... but this law would mostly allow cops to detain and bully kids under the age of 16. Not only does this new law focus the police onto a section of the community that need protection, not harrassment, it also will have the effect of taking police trust away from these kids. The social problems that can stem from this I can only imagine, but it doesnt take much thought to realize that its a negative effect.
There are far more serious matters that the police should be dealing with but fail to do, violence related to drinking and crimes related to injustice. As it is they concentrate too much time on revenue raising through road related infringements.
There are more serious problems in our society that need to be looked at.

The biggest thing is kids in general are less then fond of police, this is yet another reason for them to hate police, why do you think things like the G 20 riots happened? Politicol views, dick heads AND HATE FOR POLICE FROM YOUNG PEOPE, dont make stupid laws that effect young people, its going to give them the mind set that the law in general is wrong
matt there may be more serious problems in society. But skateboarders are always an easy target, you and i and most people on this site on the most part respect the general public and obey societies rules.Until longboarding and skateboarding in general is viewed as a legitimate sport we will have to cop it. People i talk to about longboarding are stoked ,people that actually see what it is all about are super stoked.Shake the stigma like surfers did remember everyone hated them too.Look at Kelly Slater people rate him as one of the best athletes ever our time is comin......
