Dave, public liability insurance covers ASRA against claims made by members of the public that might get injured as a result of the race. It does not cover competitors as they are not considered "members of the public".

Here's some examples to illustrate:

1. Fred Bloggs is walking his dog one day when a skateboard racer crashes into him. Fred is now a paraplegic and sues the race organiser, ASRA.

Result: ASRA's public liability insurance covers ASRA.

2. Fred Bloggs is walking his dog one day when a skateboard racer named Joe crashes into him. Fred is now a paraplegic and sues Joe. Joe says it wasn't his fault, and sues ASRA.

Result: The public liability insurance is irrelevant, because Joe is not a member of the public; he is a competitor in the event. He knowingly entered a skateboard racing event, which every reasonable person knows is an extremely dangerous thing to do, and therefore has no claim against ASRA, who always take all reasonable safety precautions.

3. A skateboard racer named Joe crashes during the race and becomes a paraplegic. Joe sues ASRA.

Result: See Example No. 2

To recap: Public liability insurance provides no direct benefit to the competitors in the race. The only benefit to competitors is indirect; public liability insurance allows legitimate (ie, non-outlaw) races to occur.

1) Because it is not a public road.
2) The PL insurance covers ASRA not the road owner.
3) You will be riding a skateboard.

Why has ASRA got public liability insurance if we need to sign away our rites to any claim of any sort when competing?

Have confirmed the road closure at Larkin Crt for CHC4 Sunday 13th June.

Everyone attending will need to download and sign the indemnity form here and bring it on Sunday.

Nathan,
I think that visitors need to get their head together to work out where they want to stay....
North Melb near markets - long boarding parks
Southbank - Art food nightlife multideck car parks
St Kilda - the Espy, beach, backpacker central!
or burbs - for a good night sleep.....don't forget to turn the lights off!

Once you have a preference we can get some ideas like ....

Basebackpackers in StKilda is highly regarded, (5 star hostel)
http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/Base-St-Kilda/Melbourne...
There are also short stay apartments and hotels in the area.
(Haggy might even help you with backpacker translations!)

http://www.kingsgatehotel.com.au/ (2-3 star)
A budget hotel in town, and near the Casino, King St Nightclubs, Southbank, and the galleries, so you can go for an ArtSkate. Also check out Melbourne's laneways for some surprising little bars, graf, and stencil work and installations.

(Good multideck(16 levels with lift) carpark is close)

http://www.flagstaffinn.com.au/ (2star)
This one is near Vic Market, and Flagstaff Gardens (where we sometimes run longboards) There is a good food at the market, and a couple of good pubs nearby. The pubs on Spencer St also have plenty of parking.

Marek,
Friday night under lights is great fun, and the "Contoller" of ditches is down the pub or tucked up in bed, which is just as well cause he gets grumpy when we use the bolt cutters to get in!
If you miss it I am sure we can get some interest for another session on the weekend. What you must not miss is Melton.

Hammer, down load the GPS file...http://www.skateboardracing.org.au/forum/topics/gps-poi-file-skatep...
If you dont have a GPS you can use the co-ordinates on maps.google.com.au
