Hey guys,
I've been looking for a new helmet lately, I figured now that i'm starting too go a bit faster and actually trying 4 wheel slides as compared too little 180's my old K-mart helmet doesn't really cut it.
By what I've seen on Hopkin 888 and Pro-tec seem too be the two leading brands, my bro and a few of his friends all have 888's sweat saver's and they seem to think that they're way better, I was going to get one of them but I noticed boardshops having a sale and a few Pro-Tec helmet's are marked down by up too $20-30, what would you guys suggest?
Cheers, Will.

No offence and all and I know i shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but they don't really look that legit? The website and all sorta reminds me of like the old Bad Boy brand or something that you would find in Big W for an extra $20 because they look cooler xD

Any helmet you get for bombing hills should have a hard foam liner in it, not just the soft squshy stuff that triple 8's have. Some protec's have it (I think the ace model) and I'm not sure if x-rated do or not (I'd guess that since they're Australian they meet Australian standards). The hard stuff basically acts as a second skull and will take a large amount of force in a crash that would other wise have gone to your head. The ones with the squishy stuff only do this a small amount (the softer something is the less energy it absorbs) and are pretty much intended for park use only.

Agreed. I got sucked into a soft foam type helmet at a skateshop (not an ASRA sponser) couple of years back with the sales person at least implying they were just as safe, just not rated, which is not true. Plus I'm cheap and the soft foam type are cheap (and my head is cheap).
Just make sure it has one of those Aust Standards Stickers and it's fine. There is no Australian Standard for skateboarding AFAIK, just on road bike use. The US has a very similar standard (lacks regular batch testing) so I wear a US rated Bern brand helmet.
It's perfectly legal to make and sell a non rated helmets in Australia just not "legal" to use it on the road riding a bike.
