One of the youngest riders at Newton's '09 will be Gabe Gwynne from Sydney. Although still young enough to be at school, Gabe is carving out a reputation in the Sydney downhill scene as one to watch at Newton's.
Gabe has a few big advantages over other riders his age; he's fast, fearless, and he's been mentored by a hard-riding group of Sydney and NACCOS folks who loan him gear and drive him to sessions.
1. What's your name, your nickname, your hometown and your age?
Gabriel, aka Gabe. Straight outta Coogee, 17 years old, 17 years young.
2. Your occupation?
I make coffee.
3. How long have you been riding for, and do you skate other styles?
Started rolling around on a popsicle stick about two years ago, didn't float my boat so I started longboarding. Got into downhill early this year and I've been hooked ever since. I'll still have a little rip around the skatepark sometimes, and I managed to land my first ollie the other day, but it's mainly longboarding.
4. What do your parents say about your skating?
Well, I wouldn't say they like the idea of their son skating down mountains, but they're supportive nonetheless.
5. What's the gnarliest road you've ridden?
7-Pins, that hill is the definition of gnar.
6. What's your plan of attack for Newton's?
Bomb it hard, then get the bus back up and bomb it hard again.
7. What do you think the race scene will be like in five years time?
Trying to think of a word to describe it. I'm thinking a mix of Gnar, Insane and Steezin'. Gnarinsteezin?
8. What's your ultimate skating ambition?
To skate on the moon.
9. Who's been the biggest influence on your riding?
Jackbro, Benbro, Robbo, Luca, Rob, Bugs, Guff, and all the SCBS and ASRA boys.
All the guys who took me to sessions, lent me gear when I needed it, pushed my limits and were just rad blokes in general, cheers for everything boys, skate or die.
10. Any sponsors you feel like mentioning?
The boys at Hopkin Skate, in St. Leonards, have been absolute legends, thanks guys.
