if your flying jetstar just get the sporting equipment baggage (its like 30 bucks) put it in a padded box duct taped together and check that in, i took 2 boards, 3 sets of trucks and 2 sets of wheels to sydney for that much $$$

Rules are different depending on the airline ur taking. Check their website. I'm pretty sure for most airlines, sporting equipment must be checked in.
