ASRA and other event organisers
I would like to clarify a few things regarding ASRA's position on events and event organisers.
ASRA encourages and welcomes any new Downhill events on the calender and any expansion of the racing scene as we have done unreservedly for many years now. In this regard we welcome GSE's efforts in organising two new races.
What we take issue with:
A private company has offered a set of services on our website directly to our members that duplicate what we already offer. Without talking to ASRA about this, it seems a strange approach to take and a big waste of our resources.
Without any consultation with ASRA, GSE has declared a national series along with a National Championships and a national ranking system to be run by a private company. It is not the place of a private company to unilaterally declare the National championships of a sport nor run a national ranking system and invite the national body to participate in their private venture.
Regarding rankings and national champions:
Why do national bodies do this? Because they have the skills to do this, they are generally independent of race organisers, they have a democratic structure, and their interests are broadly aligned with their members. National bodies are also the only organisations that can gain legitimate government recognition for national sports.
With regard to IGSA points:
ASRA is an affiliate body of the IGSA in Australia. Our President, Haggy Strom, is the Australian Director of the IGSA. The IGSA interacts with the Australian scene through ASRA, not through private event organisers.
There are appropriate ways of doing this and GSE's approach is not one of them. We would be happy to have GSE consult with us privately about this rather than communicate to individual members of ASRA through our website.

out of curiousity... if GSE has taken a strange approach to organising things so far, wouldn't it be in everyones best interest if ASRA and GSE discussed these things behind closed doors rather than causing additional public sh*tfights?!
It seems hypocritical to talk of appropriate behaviours....
GSE have stated that they have already approached ASRA in regards to a National Circuit with points being used from Newtons this year. What was the outcome of this?
OON has also declared a national series without any objections from ASRA. Is the different stance on this because GSE is offering legal events?

I didn't form a separate company to organise the OON, please don't drag an unofficial outlaw series organised by an individual into this debate.

GSE's announcement took ASRA completely by surprise. As Robbo has said, of course ASRA supports a greater number of events. However, the fact that GSE has announced a national rankings and a Nationals event without consultation with ASRA at all invites a few problems.
We would have preferred this to be discussed behind closed doors beforehand so that any problems could be ironed out without it going to public forums. However, ASRA has not been approached by GSE on any of this.
GSE's approach to ASRA in regards to a National Circuit including Newton's consisted of a single email to myself after GSE's original announcement and an hour or two before GSE's announcement of a National Circuit. In other words, there has not yet been any discussions or consultation, which in ASRA point of view should definitely have occurred.
ASRA is all for a national ranking system. However, as I'm sure you can all appreciate there needs to be some thought put into how to best do this and cater for the wide variety of events that are currently happening in our growing Australian scene. -

Lets just leave this one to the big players and not get into it, to many people start raving. It's something that can be worked out through correct communication with less internet bagging.
Sounds dumb but i can't put it in to the right words.
Not bagging you ian. You seem like a genuine bloke who gets a hard time from some people, but it's all good.
No offense to GSE or ASRA i hope it all works out.

Seems you don't even know who asra or there reps are. I have to say over the past few days my confidence in breakaway gravity circuit is melting away. Seen this before.

We have attempted via email and phone calls prior to announcing to contact ASRA, and have not received a response.
We will try again to contact the ASRA President"
i just thought haggy and Robbo actually pulled the straps and tied them off to make everything work on ASRA.

i got faith in GSE being able to get this to work, its not a break away circuit as they are still keen to work with asra the way i understand it. I hope people get behind GSE the more organisations that are working to put on legit DH events the better it is for riders

ASRA has repeatedly told people they are not event organisers they will sanction events and provide insurance for a fee. There are things that are promoted on this website that deserve much more attention than this thread. If ASRA is so concerned about a non profit company maybe we should also know what is going on with our own organisation. Who are involved what are the finances like what are we doing with the revenue generated from advertising etc Most sporting associations publish a detailed prospectus where is ours.My questions may seem harsh but it was rammed home to me by an ASRA official that ASRA was a volunteer organisation.

This is an entirely different issue that has also plagued my thoughts....
Why is it that ASRA doesn't release AGM minutes to it's financial members?
While not related to this topic it is a valid question I think
