HAHA! Billy carts. This brings back many hysterical memories of transpired ASRA events. Jacko would love it!
once upon a time there was talk of an event at falls creek....
but who knows what happened. probably no one had the time to organise it.
someone should send them an email and see if we can go up there and wheely board their track....
well....basically i did...

i looked at the actual place on street view had a look at the likely candidates and thought, well....you never know if you don't ask.

so.

To Debbie Howie,

I wasn't too sure about who to contact, but I thought I'd try your email as you are the public relations listed. Recently a longtime billy cart rider informed us he was attending the falls creek derby. For the last 3 years, the Tasmanian billy cart derby has also included other gravity vehicles, such as gravity bikes, street luges and speedboarders.

We were wondering if your event has thought about promoting to other gravity vehicles riders such as the ones listed above... As a speedboarder, we love to attend events such as this and promote a better understanding about our end of the sport as well as give people a chance to see that more events are necessary and good for communities that host them.

basically what I'm asking is, if speedboarders or street lugers were interesting in attending the falls creek derby, would we be allowed/encouraged to come up and attend- even if it wasn't to 'race' but to ride the track as a 'demo run' etc.

Thankyou in advance, if I have emailed completely the wrong person could you possibly point me in the right direction? it would be much appreciated. I can be contacted either through this email address or on xxxx xxx xxx.

Regards,
Ben Martin

i suppose we now wait and see.....
nice

Falls Creek was seriously looked at as a second event in 2009 before IGSA World Cup. Newton's Games (was that what they were going to call it) was to be the main event and Falls creek the race the weekend before. Newtons Games got canned and ASRA ran the whole show (Newtons Playground) by themselves and had no time to organise a Falls Creek race.
One of the issues with Falls Creek is it is alpine national park and you have to use special alpine grass haybales. At $20+ a bale. You could get away with 500 bales but that is $10,000 before you start adding up costs. Falls Creek have a great community, plenty of time on their summer schedule but being in a rural area everything costs more, which makes it expensive. Hopefully ASRA has money in 2011 to fund races, Falls creek might be too expensive.
ASRA's biggest hurdle is organisers. If someone wants to organise a Falls Creek race in 2011, I think it could be done.

Blog post on Jacko's and Haggy's visit in 2009

In a time before ASRA there was a race in Bangalow called Australian National Slalom Championships. It was held on the back on a billycart race. It was held for a few years but eventually the billycarts took more and more time on track and the skateboard racing was canned. I believe the last year they had skateboarding, one of the skaters (Tim) made a billycart using longboard wheels with his son. I believe he won the race, probably why they booted us out. Tim was a skate collector so think skate car 70's signal hill ;-)
Wouldn't the costs be reduced a little if we run our event before/after the billy cart one? Don't they have to haybale the track as well? =]

I'm surprised they're not more supportive of our presence there, as the mountains like you said, remote are really needing some events to pull people up there. =[

Ben, to ben, nice!
its not that they weren't supportive... it was quite the opposite. from our visit and meetings with the townspeople and
crew who organize events and manage the town and what not it was open arms for us to come and do an event. we talked logistics and all that and a figure was put forward as to how much an event would cost. and like hop said, we did not have the money. Now with things being so huge in the scene the crew behind ASRA have bigger things to think about, such as putting on the sickest race in the world (Newtons) and organizing races around OZ that are within the budget so the riders can easily afford to attend.

Falls Creek is good to go, all it needs it money and people to dedicate time and effort to get it running.
