ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

There's a two-page spread about downhill skateboarding and Skate Australia in today's Sunday Mail.
Seems to be pretty damn positive.

LOL

lucky they arent too aware of our scene yet.

God, don't even get us all started on cyclists!
Why to they get to ride on our roads in huge packs and we're not?

No, don't get started on cyclists - I am one. Packs of cyclists are an anomaly cos they're training for a sport, but the vast majority of cycling is done by people like me - riding from A to B. Would you rather I drove a car instead? Which takes less road space and is less dangerous to skateboarders?

Cyclists are your friends - it's the car drivers that are the problem.
I doubt all the old guys and girls on weekends are training for a sport... There is heaps of them!
I mean I'm a cyclist, my mountain bike gets me places. Within reason. It really annoys me when I see people in packs riding on the road, they do not shift formation of like three wide for cars. I always use the footpath, always wear my helmet and always move out of the way for walkers. Maybe we wouldn't be so harsh about cyclists if they tried any of these things?
I mean i don't want to go out and kill them, they are saving the planet and they are keeping fit, but if they can use the road so freely, why can't we?

...I always use the footpath...

That's:
* Illegal,
* statistically more dangerous than riding on the road,
* much slower than riding on the road.

The only reason I can think of to cycle on the footpath is because you think it avoids slowing down car drivers, yet it's often the other way around - car drivers slow down the cyclists.

...but if they can use the road so freely, why can't we?

Historical reasons - bikes predate cars, and it was cyclists who were instrumental in getting the first paved roads. The car drivers are the new-fangled interlopers who were only allowed to drive on public roads on the condition they were licensed, insured and their cars registered. Skateboards are even more new-fangled than cars, so it might take another 50 years.
I like cyclists too,....I am a cyclist. Car drivers can very easily injure or even kill us and they act like they dont care sometimes. Both on the bike and on the board.

What about this?
The ratio of people put in hospital on a friday/saturday night from violence is far greater than those who visit hopital from skateboarding accidents.

What if all the people that were illegally racing cars on a friday night raced skateboards instead? Would the streets be more dangerous,... or would they be safer?
Bugs in lycra! That is a mental image I didn't need before bedtime (;-)>

I think there are bike riders and cyclists. I define cyclists as the lycra clad hoards that ride 3,4 and 5 abreast around here. I have headed out to Mt Stuart at 5.30am for a ride, come over a crest in the highway with a B-Double (massive multi trailer truck to you city types) coming the other way to find cyclists all over the road in front of me. Have to try to pull up from 100kph to avoid either hitting the truck or splattering these guys ALL over my paintwork. In this part of the world these guys seem to think they completely own the road and will ride on the roadway even when there is a perfectly good cycle-lane on the road.

I think most people who ride a bike are responsible and considerate, but it seems that these "cyclists" think they are special and it is these guys who give bike riders a bad name.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Cheers

Really using a bike on the path is illegal? oops....
Skateboards too?
Wow I did know that. So soon they will want us to register our skateboards? hahaha that would be horrible.
So what can we use legally?
Logic is the key to survival.
you drive fast safely, then you drive fast safely.
You drive fast and reckless, then you may die.
You skate fast safely, then you skate fast safely.
you skate fast and reckless then you may have some pain or none at all......
Wear your helmet, skate Safe!!
Have fun = skateboarding
Adrian! Spot on! What you said is exactly how I feel but have never found the right words for it. Cheers!
Yes well don't just leave it up to someone. Anyone can pick up the phone and call their local council about a road. Make sure it is a reasonable road. Like a road to a lookout or dead end. If they see that there is a numerous amount of people asking, then the just might give a bit... There has to be hundreds of roads out there that could be closed off for a little fun. Like Mt. Stuart....

So why doesn't someone write a letter to the council about organising a park or designated location that can be used for races. I'm sure some motions have been taken but what exactly has been done?
