Community Designed / Custom longboards
Comet did it with the FSM, now its ASRAs turn to build a cummunity designed board.
The idea of this project is to design a communal mold, something that most people are happy with, whether it be a rockered freeride or topmount speedboard, whatever, then to build custom longboards to your specs from that mold. This means custom shape, flex (if any), wb, width, mounting option, graphics, the whole package.
So go crazy, talk about what works, what you'd like, and hopefully everyone can decide on a final design for the mold which will be produced.
Include;
-concave shape (flatcave, wavecave, W-cave, toecutter etc.)
-amount of concave (?mm)
-rocker/camber/flat, footpockets, wedging
-anything else you can think of, just go crazy, I'll tell you if its not possible
The final product will be for sale, in around 4-5 weeks time (after the design proccess etc) and you will be able to order a completely customized board from this mold. The more buyers, the cheaper the boards, though at the moment the price will be around $100 - $120 for a woody.
There will also be an option to buy an uncut blank form the mold, if that tickles you fancy

if you made it top mount, and someone wanted it as a drop thru, couldnt you just send a template with it for the cut outs, then they can just do the cut outs themselves.
i'm new to the terminology, so would this be sold as a rectangle of ply that has the concave pressed into it, or will it be cut to shape already?

a blank is the rectangle of wood, and yes that can be done. If you want i can cut the bolt holes in and drop through as well
the mold does not effect whether it is drop through or not, that is all post press, ie you cut it to that shape

This would be pretty cool. 1/2 inch concave gradually radial as in, flat middle then curving up gradually so it fits the profile of your foot. W cave in the back where the foot would go.
Those wooden risers would be good. 1/8 inch and give 4 per deck that's a drop thru so they can go on the bottom and top. On the bottom they act as a huge washer making the board last longer.

would you be selling a few versions of the deck (cut and drilled) shapped drop risers would be sick, you could do it so it forms a nice pocket onto your foot

yeah the boards would be completely custom, so each one would be built to the riders specs
I was also thinking of selling one 'stock' model, which would all be the same, as well as the custom boards. Just a thought.
If anyone wants I could build a few of these risers now, for use on a drop through board. Incorporating a footstop as well would be kind cool

sounds great, i think offering 3 different stock models wouldnt be a bad idea (drop though, top mount, flush mount)
The toestop idea is great, i would offer then for all mounting options as well (so you can have some footstops for your top mount, this is getting me very excited man, i cant wait to see how it turns out, i will definently be buying one when the specs are decided on

would the dropthru raisers be a diff option because it would need to be able to make it left or right footed....it would also look pretty supid as a top mount....lol...not that im worried bout that, im deffinately keen on the dropthru...

you could just flip them for left and right footed, if you made them so they sat as part of the deck almost then i could see them looking fine and working great

okay the votes are in..
10mm to 12.5mm concave, flatcave in nature
no camber or rocker
anyone got any serious problems with this setup. Shall voting continue?? Doesn't seem all that revolutionary. I was hoping for something like Robbos pic.....
*just on a side note I decided throw something in one of my old presses....
I used my usual 6 ply (which suits my weight), though on the middle two layers I cut loads of holes all over the piece, stopping about an inch in on all sides from where I wanted to cut the deck. The holes were just randomly placed, just as an experimental sort of thing, well i just finished cutting out the deck, stood it on some wood and jumped on it. Compared to all my other decks (also 6 ply) I could not notice a difference in flex, and, heres the best bit, when i weighed it it was 210 grams lighter!!!! I plan to test this idea further, but if it works properly, would you guys be interested in it for this build?
