Over 40's skating
The last time i was on a skatboard was 1976! Ripped and bombed pools and down hills on my Bahne Super Flex...I Scored an old school 30 inch Makaha (with a 70's fibre flex dec!) last month from the US. Has Invader sure grip trucks (modern version) and super soft Makaha wheels...pretty basic but has been good fun while getting up to speed again.. Im looking at getting a long board and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction here? At this stage im into carving and not so radical down hills (not yet anyway) I like the Vault Fibremix 38 (dont want to go over 40) and the Grom biz C11 and C2 ,.. any thoughts out there

avoid the whole vault deal, as for scribers, well there is a reason you dont see any riders here on them, check the hop shop, look right on your screen and you will find the link, they are open saturdays too and can sort you out with a sweet ride that will do what you want and more.

have a squiz at sector nine boards, pretty cheap and great boards. And the grombiz boards are really weird to ride and would be hard to learn on so id give them a miss

My young bloke had a ride on the grombiz and fell off three times on the space of a block. I think its the whole adjustable truck thing that throws you off. I haven't riden for twenty years either but got an Ebay special to see if i still like it. Freekin awesome.
I skated with the Townsville boys on Wednesday night on the strand and got my butt whooped, had some real trouble keeping up so i would recommend either a Sector Nine or a Loaded Dervish.
I have been doing a lot of homework and ridden a lot of others boards these are great.
Keep it up mate If your ever in Townsville I'll hook you up with a board and we'll go skate some circles round these young blokes.

Only took me a couple of weeks and i was up to speed..but need a decent board i can trust going fast..so far the i like the loaded Vanguard and the Landyachtz Battleaxe...of course i dont know what the hell im looking at but by the specs could suit me...Sector nine ,,,seem to be much cheaper however being an old bugger has its advantages as money doesnt come into it here. I get uo 2 Townsville every now and then as i race outrigger canoes and have races up there........Noosa race looks good lived up there for a rew years and know the hill well...

I'm over 40, and didn't skate from about 1977 to about 2003. It all comes back quickly enough. Never thought I'd be bombing big hills, but here I am.
I agree with the advice re Vaults and Scribers. If you're just after a longboard to carve on, you can't go past a Loaded Dervish, or similar type of deck, with 180 Randals/Paris/Bears with soft bushings and 70mm slalom wheels. You'd be guaranteed to love that setup for general cruising and carving.
When it comes to deck length, it's the wheelbase that counts, not the overall deck length.

Yeah I grew up skateboarding the hills in Seaview Downs Adelaide, I think I was still into it until the late 70s, but I never went anywhere near a pool or ramp.
Ive been doing this for a little over four years and Im nowhere near as good as some (most) of the guys here on the site, (especially including these younger guys, they are fearless). But Ive got to say, I love a board with cut outs. I had a cheap surf shop topmount for a while, then I got a top mount Arbor,... (similar to the shape of the Vault, a pintail). But the board that was a whole different world was a drop through with cutouts. Thats when I really fell in love with longboarding.
A lowered deck makes braking and kicking along much easier, plus you dont get wheelbite as easy as if you were riding a top mount.
So what they are saying about the Dervish is a good choice,.. especially since you like flex. But there are a ton of other choices including a few Aussie ones too. :)
