ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

This discussion is aimed at a few individuals who in the past have given me shit about encouraging kids and adults to chuck a helmet on.

Comment by Geoffrey Templer 20 minutes ago (Taking the EOTH)

"my mate fucked up a slide up at frome (carpark) where those tossers put that talcum powder (to make slides easier) and smashed his head and had a seasure.... ambo came after like 10mins :\ great. but he was alright, after bout 2 hours he was well enough to be spotting out the hot nurses :)"

Of course he was NOT wearing a helmet. The kid could've died..... OR WORSE!
Thank someone upstairs that he is ok but now we are one place less to skate in the city. Not only that but if anyone catches wind of this (being anyone from the press) this could be a disaster for us.
They will be cracking down hard in U-parks in Adelaide now that someone has actually been seriousley injured on there property.

This is what happens when older, more experienced people encourage others to ride without a lid. "relax your on private property, it wont hurt", "you dont skate hard or fast enough to do any real damage"

Riding without a lid is STUPID. Promoting it is STUPID. Thinking "it wont happen to me" is STUPID. Reading these comments and thinking "chill out", "relax" is STUPID.

If not for your self, for your parents, your brother and your sister and for the continued privelage to skate that you share with all of your closest friends..... Wear a fu#*ing helmet!

yea we all own a helmet.
when we're cruisin streets, who cares? if your not hitting over 10km/h, just ride safe.
if u do a hill we're a helmet, but when its 35 degrees riding a helmet on a flat is just dumb.
its like getting sunstroke in a beanbag.
ride safe where ever.
no abuse is needed on asra, its just purely dumb

Sorry, but if that was the case noone up here would ever wear a helmet. If heat is an issue wear a light coloured lid, keep up the fluid and maybe wear a Buff or similar under it.

Among the worst head hits are the ones at slow speed as your speed into the ground is much higher (at speed forwards your vertical speed is less) I have 2 friends who would be brain damaged now if not for their helmets and they both came off at walking pace, both of them hit the ground hard enough to break their lids (that could heve been their skulls).

NOT wearing a helmet when you ride is DUMB, if you don't believe me, take a visit to the Head Trauma Unit at your local hospital and just see what happens when heads hit solid objects.
i dont skate without one
Some bloody good people have died doing what we do, whether it be rolling in a park, or doing a hill, at high or VERY low speed, and they all had Helmets on. Whether you've got a pretty face, or ugly as a hat full of arseholes, somebody loves ya, and wants you to come home at the end of the day. If us older, or young experienced guys, or girls, come across as being hard-nosed about safety issues, and wearing the right gear, we don't mean to be, we just want to skate or ride with ALL the crew involved in what we do, rather than going to your funeral or hospital bed, and missing skating with you everyday. Sentimental maybe, but it's the truth, and another aspect to why we all push the "safe riding practices" the way we do.
If chicks dig you riding without a helmet, ask yourself this question.."would they come to the hospital or respite center everyday and help feed you"? The options to NOT wearing a helmet are just not worth it.
Just my two cents.

given that numerous asra members attended a funeral last year for a young and talented skater/film maker, comments like this are deadset offensive.
Agreed.
skate hard and skate safe.
have fun, put a helmet on.

Ian,

A fella died in Europe this year skating on his way home from work. He had worked his job for 4 years and skated home the same way everyday. He was in a park and on a slight slope (enough that he didnt have to push) when he came off. He was not wearing a helmet. He sat in hospital for 2 days before he died, leaving behind 2 children and a wife. Speed is not the issue. Hitting your head on something hard is the issue and as this fella proved, you can do that at walking pace. I will try and find the artical again in the next couple of days. Until then, here is another. It is a scary thing that people have that opinion.

i didnt mean it to be offensive, i didn't know skating could be so dangerous at slow speeds. i'm sorry if this upset you, and from now on ill wear a helmet. Sorry guys, i just didnt realise.
Dont worry about it Ian.
In my mind, Falling at low speed has a higher chance of being serious then falling at high speed. When you fall at a higher speed, your body's momentum will most likely carry you forward and unless you hit another object (lets say there's nothing to hit) you're not going to fall at an accelerated pace. However, at a low speed, It's likely you will fall backwards (like a pooshoot) which means that you're hitting the ground faster then a normal fall and all of the pressure will be on the rear of your head. I'm no doctor, nor have i had any real experience with bad stacks..I just thought i'd get my thoughts down in writing because they've been bugging me for a while.

So I am having trouble finding more info on this fella. Lived in Sweden, was picking up his kid from school. Riding a Vanguard. Came off backwards, hit his head and died in hospital. The falla you are watching in this video died because he was not wearing a helmet. A more than capable skater. It was not the fancy tricks that got him, it was skating in a park to pick up his daughter at walking pace.
