ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

If all the longboard shops around the country started a series for their team riders. One race per year for each shop, outlaw or sanctioned. Hopkin, Creative, Daily Grind, Hemley, Voodo and whoever else is aboot the place. Riders would have another excuse to travel from state to state and check out new hills. All shops that have riders entered in the race could donate prize money (hosting shop organises and funds the event in it's state). Prize money would help riders travel to other events and at the end of the year you would have a shop with a proven best team in the country.

Would be dope...

sounds like a sick idea

I like the idea, and I feel that the shop riders would appreciate winning money instead of a set of bearings or something like that which they probably get for free.

Sounds like a damn good idea to me!  Now, just to get on a shop team...

that sounds SICK!

sounds awesome

cool idea dani.....but as far as a proven best team in the country, how much more proof do you want,.Hopkin team takes it by a mile,.there are races allover the country now,we have a rankings,..plenty of excuses now to travel state to state,.just get yourselves there and do it!

benny said it in one. Hopkin team is the only team who has proven itself to be the best. we all have something to offer to the scene, we already travel interstate AND overseas, the team is constantly ranked at the top in Australia and we are the only crew who produce top media.

its a cool idea but instead of investing all that time effort and money into putting an event on that excludes the average joe just to strengthen the fact that Hopkin Team dominates, that time/effort/money could be put into having an event that EVERYONE can race at...

Why not blend the outlaw series and this together? each shop hosts a leg of the oulaw series, where everyone competes? means there is a set number of races in the series, and there is garenteed support behind each race (egos on the line obviosly)?

I thought the same thing about excluding people Jacko but figured it has been done before with invitational events. Also I figure average Joe can't afford to get to all of the events in Australia anyway since the racing scene has grown so much within the past year so what's another 6?

It would hopefully encourage shops to sponsor more riders to, especially some of the dope groms Aus has. It would give others a chance to win some decent cash to get them to the next event, weather they choose to go to pump station, beat the bastard, overseas or the next shop contest is up to them. With more sponsored riders and a greater opportunity to earn some money we might see a few more Aussies overseas in the seasons to come which of course we are every year anyway but there can never be to many Aussies at an IGSA event.

Hopkin is a dope shop and without a doubt has helped, if not built the Aussie scene up from scratch. Other shops have riders that are doing the same things though. Leigh from Dailies is putting out sweet videos, each one gains international recognition. The last one he put out from the snowies saw Darren from Loaded offering Bow, Leigh and I large sums of wheels he loved it so much. Bow had his 2nd year racing internationally this year and I had my third. Not to forget Leigh was in Canadia and the U.S of Gay last year. Leeso from Creative skate has been racing overseas for ever (since he's so old). Daddow from Creative is pushing out some dope looking and performing boards and and giving other Aussie board manufactures some healthy competition. Ian from WA puts out some decent videos and is a ripper but is always to short on funds to travel to to many events. Mr Benbro is yet to go international which is a shame because we all know he would kick some serious ass on the other side of the waters but maybe a couple of wins could help dock his boat and get him over there.

The other benefit would be the added (potential) publicity it would give core shops like Hopkins, Dailies and Creative. I don't know about other shops but I know Dailies is constantly competing with lame ass surf shops who care nothing for the scene other than the money they can make from it. It would help to exclude shops like this from our scene or force them to step it up and contribute a little and maybe stock some decent product.

We all know that all these shops are dope and all do their part for our scene. When I left for Europe last year in February Dailies had just started to stock some downhill gear. We had maybe 10 (ABSOLUTE MAX) riders in SA. When I returned in November, less than a year later Adelaide alone had upwards of 200 kids eager to shred. That's not including rural SA. It would not so much be a ''which shop is better'' thing but more of an opportunity for these core shops that we know and love to work closely together, communicate and give them a reason to throw some benefits to more riders. I don't know as I don't have to much experience in the field of event organisation but if a governing body like ASRA plus several ''big'' businesses were to approach local councils in regards to events perhaps it would help sway things our way a little more to as opposed to one shop and a couple of riders.

All food for thought.

I agree with everything discussed in this thread. Idea is boss. Hopkin are a boss shop with a boss team. Getting more support behind outlaw races would make for boss outlaws, maybe not to the extent of excluding other non-shop organised races though.

I certainly think that if this was to take off it would become somewhat of a proving ground for Australian riders so that the best get noticed, not just the dudes lucky enough to ride for Hop (not saying they aren't the best mind you ;)). I know there are fast dudes out there that aren't getting the recognition they deserve because no one really knows they're there and I think something like this may help get them recognized and grow the scene more. Not to mention a unified body of legitimate and successful businesses with some money behind them would have more chance of getting a road closed for a race than some dude or what ever.

My 2c

No argument with national series of races, involving Pro or Pro/am events.  No problem with shop sponsorships either.

If you lot are really serious about getting noticed you need to focus on the SPORT not the Prize.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) will not recognise anymore National Sporting Organisations (NSO's) for Skateboarding, because SbA provide all the recognition that is needed.  Skate Australia filled out the application in 2002, and now the roller dancers get all the money, and all the credit! But it is worse than that. They also represent skateboarding at the Olympic committee level.  So unless you are in the Mountain Dew "twig flip" comps, you are not participating in a recognised sport.

If you really want recognition the first thing you all need to do is get aligned with your local State Government recognised skateboarding association, and if you can't find one, form one. VSA can help.  (see my news story http://www.skateboardracing.org.au/profiles/blogs/victorian-skatebo... and try and join the dots to why national recognition of the SPORT makes far more sense than sponsored rock-star team racing)

Everyone who is serious about ASRA needs to get political right now.

Get your collective shit together and form or join state funded organisations NOW, that recognise ASRA.

You need a State Government recognised voice, so that you Can negotiate with the local Roads Authorities, Councils and Police, and so that eventually the ASC also gets to hear about it.

Write letters to your state and fedral MP's telling them about the sport, and ask them to help with getting the ASC to recognise ASRA.

Otherwise learn to ollie stairs, and grind rails, because in this country, that is all that is recognised as the Sport of Skateboarding.  But dont take my word for it here is a link to the SbA approved method (helmet not required) for skating car-parks:

wow, cheers for the link mate! I never knew about SbA, its cool as fuck! skateboarding rules, all of it.
