Cleaning Bearings with Turpentine
Quick Question,
Will using Low Odour Turps (100% LIQUID HYDROCARBONS UN 1993) be an effective cleaning agent when trying to clean my bearings, or do I need to go out and buy some acetone.

use some metho. works great for me. Just get a small container, put your bearings in (with shields off), and shake it up. take em out, spin em, then put in some new metho into the container and soak em for a day. then take em out, put two drops of lube in them, spin em, then put the shields on and back in the wheel.

machine oil also tends to work pretty well and gets all the dirt outta them fast, you wont even need to soak it overnight

Morning fresh + hot water to clean.
Wrinse off in Metho.
Add lube
Metho doesn't break down the grease as good but does evaporate off quickly after wrinsing clean.
Bearings must be 100% dry before lubing.

i find petrol to be a cheap easy and fast cleaner, it cuts through anything and dries just as quick as metho.
you have to be quick using hot water, i tried this, had all eight sitting out, by the time i got to the last one, it had already started to oxidize!
i rinse em in petrol, spin them out and stick them in a warm place, very very low oven for a minute to evaporate the remaining petrol, then lube them up straight away.
only takes 15 min's, don't have time for these two day cleaning methods!!
another thing i've tried is using silicon spray lube, this is a very thin lube, fast as, but it doesn't last long at all. the good thing is that you just spray it in there, it blasts out all the dirt and relubes in one easy step!

Agreed, there are more potent and stronger cleaning products available however I prefer going with softer chemicals.
I use an air compressor to help blow-dry em out quicker.

turps wouldn't be so good because it is quite oily, and leaves a crusty film

Why don't you try it?
I'm sure it'll clean your bearings but that shit's toxic as. Smells bad, takes ages to get out of your skin. Melts rubber gloves.............the list goes on.

Also, it is low odour turps, so that means it wont smell, it will only be poisonous :)

ha ha, yeah I mistakingly used "gum" turps (artist quality) many years ago, doesn't clean well and will eat away at any synthetic components (so remove covers/ clean separately etc). oh, and they seized up real bad ,)
petrol / kero / work best to dissolve/ remove oil, though I will try Fitz' detergent blend next. (sounds better in theory)

Yeh, I received my bearing cleaning kit yesterday, and after reading the cleaning instructions, It directly states that you should not use turpentine.
In the end I used some methanol purchased from the chemist.
