my mate is a structural engineer for Visy (ie. glorified cardboard box maker) and some of the shit he has designed is crazy solid. i couldn't destroy a coffee table he made out of corrugated cardboard with 2 of us jumping on it right in the unsupported middle. I would trust corrugated cardboard over polystyrene any day of the week

Pretty awesome stuff. Clear shell version would freak people out. This is much the same principle as many aerospace compostie cores - normally flimsy materials can be engineered to be surprisingly strong and impact resistant.
