yeah i got pulled over the other day by some pommy cops for not wearing my helmet. i was actually really embarrassed, cos i always wear my helmet and am always the first to point out people riding without protection. so i pretty much agreed to everything they said (knowing the law), which gave them no incentive to be dicks about the whole situation. i did however cop an $80 fine which came in the mail yesterday. i won't be leaving the house without my helmet from now on, thats for sure.
Are you required to wear a helmet in SA?? Usually they have to legitimise what you do before they can ask you to do it in a certain way.
i was on the way home from work one day and i got off the bus and was rolling 20m to the crossing before bombing one of my fav hills, and i rolled passed these two coppers as i was reaching into my bag to pull out my helmet. anywho i was waiting at the crossing for the green light and had just finished clipping up my helmet when the coppers came up and said you really should put that on...
i looked at them and said "well... thats what im doing?" which they replied "no your not you just rolled right passed us without it on..."
i was pretty amazed how stupid they were and said "can you not see it on my head? i was rolling 20m down the road on the FOOTPATH and was putting it on as i passed you, and it is now securely fastened to my head"
they then said "dont argue with me i know what i saw and you didnt have it on so dont talk back to me"
we had started to cross the road and they were walking along side me still crapping on and ended up saying "if you dont stop arguing with me im going to give you a $200 fine" to which i said "get fucked you wankers and just skated off down the hill"
they had fun trying to catch me.

some cops are just plain assholes
Why are these cops obsessed with skateboarders wearing helmets? It's illegal to skate just about any road and yet they focus on helmets, which there is no law about.
i got a fine for riding on the road once, andalthough it is normally a busy road there were no cars in sight so i had some fun and slashed the road all over the place, then a cop car came riding right up my ass, and he was being an ass about it, saying who am i gonna call when i get hit by a car and someone has to scrape me off the road... i looked around and said "what cars, the only car was you and you were driving very recklessly behind me" i ended up copping a $54 fine and his main point was that i had no helmet on... to which i asked so if i had a helmet on then i wouldnt get a fine? he said no. so then i asked why would it matter if i wore a helmet or not im still gonna get fined... he then threatened me with another fine for abusing a police officer...

face it people, skaters are scum in the eyes of the pigs....

the even stupider thing was when i received my fine it says the offence was for "using a skateboard (wheeled device) in + accross lane 1 and 2 of falcon st eastbound"
but then in the Short Title Of Offence it says "Not keeping left when using wheeled device/toy"

so im to beleive that if i keep left at all times im allowed to ride my board on the road?
i keep this fine in my wallet at all times just in case they try to get me again, joke will be on them....
You could have taken that to court and successfully challenged it cos the cop didn't write the charge correctly. Depends how much time/hassle you're prepared for to recover $54.
thats what i thought, $54 i'll pay that and keep the fine for next time...

moral of the story is, cops are fucked... i would like to know if there are any cops that skate? anywhere in the world? i bet theres none....
maybe it's progress!

I always bomb this small hill (I live in Melbourne, not much in the city T_T) when I go back form my Gf's place at night when theres no cars. Anyways, its about 2 blocks long and I don't really got that fast. If i time the lights right, makes getting home oh-so-fun. Got pulled over by cops tonight. There were a whole bunch of them, and one came running out shouting at me to stop. When I did, he grabbed my skateboard and chucked in on the sidewalk and asked me to get off the 'fkin road" 0.0

no warning, no professionalism. just shouting and swearing. 0.0

I've been reading the forums about the laws. Can I get fined? I pretty much stick to the bicycle lanes. I don't wanna get fined cuz I take the bike lanes to uni. I outpace the bikes most of the time, even uphill haha..
Did u get fined? I think in Victoria as long as the speed limit of the road is 50 or less, you are allowed to skate on it.
You can't skate after sunset, there must be not center line on the road and the speed limit must be <50. I think you just got a hot headed cop, this happens sometimes. I would be inclined to pretend it didn't happen and continue to skate as normal.
I think the victorian law is you can skate on unmarked roads up to 50km/h otherwise you're suppose to stick to the sidewalks. If I'm skating on the road I stick to the bike lanes and wear a helmet no troubles with cops there
