ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

so, just this week i had a minor crash, with road rash on both elbows, a badly bruised thumb, and a few road rash's to the hips. $250 later my parents have just told me they dont want me to longboard again, because every time i go out skating they sit at home waiting for a call from someone, that Daniel (me) is in an ambulance, which of course is quite a shock, even though its never happened. after every session i come home with a few new wounds, and they're quite fed up with it. I am however getting better are longboarding and coming home with very few grazes each week.

I would like some help on how to convince my parents on how to get me back into the skating world.
(yes i wear all padding wherever i can, except elbow guards, but gonna invest in some when and if i come back to longboarding)

My parents hate me skateboarding, no changing their mind. They even didn't talk to me for six months (and i was spending two nights a week teaching music in a music room at their house)
Just move out as soon as possible! It's what i did.

BAHAHAHAA!

Tonight on Jerry Springer!

Mum and Dad refuse to talk to their son Skittles because he rides a skateboard!

''Haven't seen him in six months, don't care to either. Such a menace to society on that wheely board!'' - Dad

''I didn't raise my son Skittles to be silly, I wanted Skittles to be a serious boy with serious life prospects. I never thought I would see the day that Skittles would lose his way'' - Mum

''I do what I waaaaant!'' - Skittles

We risk our lives every day, don't even have to be doing anything. The old lady who owns this house was sleeping when the runaway bus came crashing into her bedroom.

Get your dad skateboarding. Take him skating with you. I am presuming he skateboarded as a kid, if he didn't then clearly he didn't have a childhood. If you can get him on board - happy days. If you can't you are screwed, in which case the advice Bugs gave is sound.

haha, pretty much!

"Accidentally" leave a crack pipe and some white powder where it can be found. When they flip out, tell them that you switched to doing hard drugs because they're safer than getting grazes from coming off a skateboard....

Start to get really interested in motorcycle racing .

Or start showing unusually high interest in small lycra shorts and video re-runs of the Sydney Mardi Gra, cause not skating is GAY.

have you considered roller blading? or a scooter to go with your big girls blouse?

i think i met your parents once…..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62lSmQ8X1zI

you know what to do next.

All great advice so far. As a parent of a longboarder myself i see my son with gravel rash all the time in varying degrees of severity. Knee's, elbows, arms, shoulders, back, hips and thighs have all copped a flogging and it pains me to see it as it can mostly be avoided with the use of the correct pads W O R N  while he skates. Read W O R N !

Pads suck! I know, they restrict movement, look gay sometimes and are a pain in the arse to carry around when you aren't wearing them. Whats the alternative? Limited skin on your knees and elbows now thats really cool. Permanent scaring, even cooler. Look, I lost a fair amount of skin when i was younger racing BMX bikes and still have the scars to prove it. Shit happens and you're always going to loose skin.

Explain to your parents how much you like riding with your friends and how much it means to you. Ask tehm to become involved or just come and watch for a session to see the stoke on everyones faces.

The solution is simple, promise to:

- Not to skate at night on the road or unlight arears

- Wear a helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads when ever skating

- Not to skate on dangerous roads and roads that are deemed to be illegal unless it is an organised event or race

(At least till your abit older anyway)

- Use common sense, your parents brought you up hopefully they've done a good job and trust in their ability as parents.

- Check in with them regulary by text or phone, let them know where you are and that you are okay.

If all else fails show them this thread and while they are reading it tie them up, gag them and go for a long, long final skate.

good luck

BRING ON THE APOCALYPSE! all u gotta do is survive it and then all the empty roads you can skate!! might be useful when running from the cannibalistic remnants of humanity!

a life lived in fear is a life half lived. (fuck old bones, no good makin em coz they hurt too much)

Just had the 'talk' after a similar incident.

My parents notified me that anyone that skateboards is a stupid bogan who has no respect for the law.

Must give up skating now as I don't want to be associated with those kinds of people!

and to all those kids whos parents don't want them skating, listen to them.  It's better that you sit inside on a computer all day or go out and play rugby.  Do something respectable!
