Safety Class in Newcastle?
Would anyone be willing to come to Newcastle for a day in the school holidays after Christmas to teach a bunch of Groms about footbreaking, shutdown slides, wearing safety gear, etc. Preferably someone young, say late teens to early twenties, that is very good and can impress so they get the groms attention?
I am sure I could get you pay for the day from all the parents chipping in and provide food and drink, and pick up and drop back from say as far as North Sydney.
Whoever is puting their hand up would have to get the approval from members from this site as to their ability.

I'd definitely vouch for both Paul Carey and Benbro as suitable...except they're a bit old...:) There'd be a bunch of people in Sydney that would be good if you can lure them that far. Try the Hop Shop...they might be able to set something up.

im sure we would get their attention ,especially if there even partly interested in longboarding,...
wat is age when you still got it.your only old when you skate old..lol...thats wat im sticking with anyways...haha

Top Aussie at Newtons has offered his services BJ. I would jump at that regardless of age. These groms would be learning from One of the best skaters in Australia. Can't beat that. Good work as usual Benbro!

Its not the age its just Bernard's opinion on what might best influence these young groms into wearing their safety gear. I think he's just saying they don't listen much to their parents so a different tact is in order.
What they need to know is that Benbro is the current form rider in the country as in top 5 in the recent World Cup and PC in a legend of the sport. Maybe a good murrays session with them might be in order and might be an idea to hookup Gabe for the trip

OK Benbro. You sound as if you are the man. I was only thinking young so that they would relate.
If this sort of thing has been done before I would appreciate some advice.
I was thinking of having a skate day and inviting the local groms along. I have a safe spot in mind. Mainly 13 & 14yr old. Some older kids they accasionally skate with may be interested as well. Could get 15 to 20 or more. They must have a helmet, gloves and knee pads to skate. Have some small comps and classes on shut down slides, footbreaking etc. Then give them flyers on a bigger comp that I would organise with prizes. This comp day would be a month or two later with some downhill and style, say best slide, etc. If they want to enter they have to have the safety gear and prove they can safely stop by either footbreak or sliding. Prizes would be worth practicing for. Say a new board, vouchers to skate shop, etc. What do you think?

ok sweet,BJ id be happy to be involved and spread the stoke amongst the groms,.show them that within our community wearing helmet,gloves and protective gear is not just cool its mega uncool to not wear it and un acceptable.,
and explain why. im sure we could put together some sticker packs for them to take home.
i think the first day should be an explanatory and safety day,the basics.,not worrying about any competitive aspect amongst them yet,..just going over the gear,the practicality of the gear and equipment/setups,.and as you mentioned basic skills like braking and board control,sliding etc.and having fun..
then progress with them from there..

Sounds great. I was thinking about after Christmas some time. How are you placed in early January?
There is a new industrial subdivision that is not yet open. No cars and a good but short hill. Should be a perfect spot. I will post a vid of the kids skating it.

Do these kids wear seat belts in the car?
Let them taste first hand what happens when you dont wear safety gear.
13-14 should understand the diffrence between death and looking diffrent.
But if everyones wearing the same thing, how diffrent could you look.
