ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to longboarding, been doing it for about 2 weeks. I want a board that I can learn on that can do pretty much anything (cruising, carving, a bit of downhill and maybe some ditches if i can find them). I am about 180cm and around 75kg and i've got $350 to blow. I was looking at the Original Malakai 40 but don't want to wait ages for postage thats really expensive. I've checked out the Gravity 39" carve and 40" Brad Edwards on Boardshop and the Dregs Tear Drop on hopkin but I'm just not sure what to get. Any advice would be sweet.

My best advice, try before you buy.
Hook up with some other riders and go for a roll on their boards so you can work out what you like/dont like,
want/dont want.
If your goin the ditches, probably wouldnt go for a dropthru truck mounts or a drop deck cause you want to keep
as much clearence as you can for the drop ins and trannies.
Then do want a big flat deck with room to move around on or some concave for lock in and a tail for kick turns?
Trucks wider is more stable. But even tho diff brands are the same width they turn different.
Wheels big,fat and soft are comfy and easy to ride but you sacrifice a bit of speed, but by the time your
capable of telling the difference in speed loss you'll know what to get next.

Just try and get as many hours up on different rigs as possible so you know a bit before you buy,
yeh everyone says they make the best of whatever but people are all different and like diff stuff.
You might love ridin a 7.5 popsicle with a 13.5 w/b but i aint got a hope of fittin my fat arse on it,
so i go 9 or 10 pig with a 17 w/b.
Wayne 183cm 99kg.
Agreed with Da Bear. Ride as many different boards as you can and see what sort of a feel you like.
There is no ultimate board, just what each person sees as their own ultimate board should they have something they favour over everything else.
get a dervish
If you can rustle up the extra $130, yeah, get a Dervish.
I was riding my friends sector 9 carbon trylam and that felt pretty good, it was really light as well and handled the pavement smoothly. It also went down hills really well. To get them in Australia though you have to pay heaps or buy internationally. Also is it worth saving that extra money for the dervish, is it easy to learn on and everything?
I don't know much about the trylams. If it works for you and you're good to go through trouble to get it then go for it for sure. I'd have to agree with Bugs and Jacko though, if you're good to work up the extra money, a Dervish is an awesome all-rounder. I got my first one about 2 weeks ago and make love to it every night.
Sweet, I think I might go with the dervish then. What set up should i go with on the dervish? should I go straight with Boardshops setup:

One Set of Loaded Orangatang In Heat 75mm wheels and select your colour/durometer below.
One Pair of Randal RII Trucks A top truck that is long lasting.
Abec 7 bearings. Got the need for speed? These deliver. With Delrin Crowns, Rubber Serviceable Shields and Light Synthetic Oil. These bearings are awesome. Rated ABEC 7.
1.25" Hardware and Hard Black Risers.
JESSUP Grip Tape. Super sticky with great grip.
LOADED

Or customize it on Hopkin?
dervish from hopkin, customise with paris trucks, loaded 4 presidents 80a bones reds bearings if you call up we can do it for a good deal.
oh and by the way, why is boardshop charging for jessup griptape with the dervish? the dervish comes with grip already! putting a flat sheet of griptape on a dervish screws with the flex pattern...
Hopkin all the way man. Like it was said above, Jacko can cut you some sweet deals and they actually know their shit.
Thanks for the offer Davie but I think I might just get the Dervish from Hopkin with everything. What flex should I go with on the dervish? I seem to fit in both categories
rayne hustler
randal 180s
lemon bigz
reds.
venoms.

oh yeah.....i reckon that'd be the all rounder...either that or an avenger/nemesis/dregs drop alpine...
I agree...if in doubt with Loaded decks go for the stiffer flex. Works better for sure.
