why do the pros use top-mount boards for speed?
hey i see a few pros using the rayne avenger and chopped comet voodoo doll, those kinda boards are pretty similar looking, just wondering why pros use them instead of the drop-through or double-drop boards.. are they more stable at higher speeds being top-mount?

It's the speedcheck craze..... Eveyone wants to break into slides instead of using their feet to break. Sliding the board gives you that advantage of still having both feet locked in and able to hold your tuck coming out of the slide, instead of readjusting from a foot break.
Top mounting flat decks such as the Rayne boards gives the guys the advantage of sliding them. A lowered speedboard has a much lower centre of gravity and just doesn't have the same responsivness to break into a slide. It wants to stick to the ground and is more of a board for straight out runs with high speed. They can be pre drifted but it's work.

they may have less base stability but really its personal preference, whatever you get used to or love riding - you will feel most stable and comfortable on.

In my experience, double dropped boards don't want to hold a line at all, if you push them sideways they'll let go and keep on going sideways. Topmounts are the other way, I don't even think I can break a topmount out stand up sliding (can't say i've ever seriously tried though). However, I ride a drop through on indy's and sidewinders and my friends' Jim Z on paris and inheats was much easier to break out than my board. Even though mine's crazy slidey.

By rights the laws of gravity should come into play here hahahah.
Lowered boards have a lower centre of gravity meaning more stability and should also have more traction.
Top mount is a lot higher meaning les stability and grip.
We need some serious scientific analysis to draw up a solid conclusion hahaha. Then it comes down to wheelbase and stuff like that too. Too much to handle

It all depends what you like.
Personally I rode a topmount OS this year because I like the traction side of things.. And you will get use to the stability differences

a top mount gives you more leverage over the trucks, that coupled with the higher ride hight means that when you corner more of the force is going down, through the trucks and into the wheels, rather than sideways, giving you more 'traction'. A lowered board is the opposite, when you corner you have less leverage over the trucks, and more of the force is going sideways, giving them less 'traction'
Like the others said topmounts are less stable, though if your used to it its worth the trade off for the added 'grip'
Its also a 'feel' thing, big drop decks can feel 'hammocky,' whereas the topmounts have a more direct feel
