ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hi all,

This may be able to be talked about at the AGM or answered by Bugs/Robbo,

re the "rules" of how it could/would work.

With the increase in numbers of entrants into the CHC rounds it would be great to see

everyone on the day, (no matter how fast or slow they are) have a least a few runs, head to head.

Canberra last year was great, cos there was 39? entrants and the slowest 10 ran head to head

to fill the 32 grid position.

So the 7 extras/slowest got to have a few runs, rather than just out the door after 2 qualifiers.

I dont like too see anyone, esp the newbies miss out on the opportunity of what maybe,

their once a year, "racing" experience.

Same goes with people travelling, dont want anyone travelling 1/2 way cross the country

to pack up after 2 DQ's qualifiers.

Unless there's some major catastrophic skateboarding disaster in aus, that wipes out the

top 20, I accept that I'll only ever be a stocking stuffer/also ran.

But i enjoy the laughs and racing.

Wayne.

Yep, I'd almost forgotten that system:- a knock out draw for the seeds from no. 32 onwards, and the winner advances into the main draw as the 32nd seed. From an organiser's perspective it's quick and easy, and it gives all the beginners and slow guys a real experience of head-to-head racing. It also allows somebody who simply mucked up both their qualifying runs to live again.

It's a good idea and we should use it wherever we have more than 32 people in a head-to-head race.
as joint wooden spoon holder at present i'm all for this haha, i will be spewing if i can make it down to melbourne and don't even get a few runs head to head.
Personally I've been lucky enough to make the the top 32 so far, but I'm right on the edge sometimes! So I'm all for this run off system too. I hadn't even considered the possibility of DQing 2 qualifiers but it could easily happen.

Catastrophic skateboarding disaster...Hmm maybe we could arrange a special charter flight for the top 20 to the next race....Bwahaha.
A bump/reminder for this weekends racing in MOSS/Team MELBURN territory.
From Bugs' message sounds like we will be doing this in melbs this weekend? Go Bugs go.

In reply to JudgeK, simply splitting qualifiers into A/B based on qualifying times is quite arbitrary. I have been to races where they did this and it is unsatisfactory. If you qualify 25th, you are last in the A group but if you qualify 26th, you are first in the B group. Sucks if you qualify 25th...
I think having a knock out draw is probably the best method. Perhaps extending the knock out draw to place more than just the 32nd seed in the final draw, say 28th - 32nd? Not sure of the logistics - Bugs?
I agree that splitting the race in two gives arbitrary and weird results, and creates incentives for people to ride slower in qualifiers to ensure they get more head-to-head racing.

I like the "second-chance" system better. The only disadvantage is that it might be "better" to qualify 32nd than qualify 30th, but that seems a small issue.

Here's my overly complicated proposal. Basically the "second-chance" draw is for either spot 32, or spots 31 and 32, depending on how many people there are overall.

If there are:

33 people: Seeds 32 and 33 race, the winner takes spot 32.
34 people: Seeds 31 to 34 have a 4-man knockout, with the two finalists taking spots 31 and 32.
35 people: Seeds 32 to 35 have a 4-man knockout, the winner takes spot 32.
36 people: Seeds 31 to 36 have a 8-man knockout, with seeds 31 and 32 getting a bye in the first round. The two finalists take spots 31 and 32.
37 people: Seeds 32 to 37 have a 8-man knockout, with seeds 31 and 32 getting a bye in the first round. The winner takes spot 32.
38 people: Seeds 31 to 38 have a 8-man knockout, with the two finalists taking spots 31 and 32.
39 people: Seeds 32 to 39 have a 8-man knockout, with the winner taking spot 32.
40 people: We're into 16-man knockouts now, and I can't be bothered to figure it out.

Marek, hasn't anybody told you you're too old for stairs? Stick with skateboards.
Steve, you'll be missed, but maybe not by Haggy and Nathan who won't have to beat you to win :)
