ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Some very sad news; on Friday night, Anton (Anthony Fricker, AKA Skate Australia) was skating on the Gold Coast and had a tragic accident.

At the bottom of a run he came off his board and fell. His head took the full force, knocking him out. Emergency services were immediately called and Anton was rushed to hospital. He is currently on life support, while his family and friends say goodbye. It is expected that life support will be removed in the next few days. A funeral service and memorial will be announced.

Anton was wearing a helmet. This is a tragic accident. ASRA asks its members to refrain from posting speculation or unecessary questions regarding this accident. A sudden death stirs up a lot of emotion. His family acknowledges how important ASRA and longboarding were to his life. We encourage you to post up your memories and stories about Anton. We would like this to be a tribute and celebration of Anton's life, that it may help with the grieving process. He has been a big part of ASRA over the last 12 months; a creative force that inspired and motivated many of us. His Skate Australia videos will be a lasting tribute to an amazing man.

As an old school skater, and someone always keen to see guys chasing their dreams instead of joining the rat race or sitting in front of the TV, it is always sad to hear of those that are out their chasing their dreams and actually "doing it" leaving this mortal incarnation. I have never met Anton, but can see from the many who have shared in his life that he will be greatly missed. Heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and crew. I have said goodbye to a number of young men and a couple of women like Anton, who have passed on too early doing what they loved, skiing, surfing, snowboarding, etc..and it is never easy, but you never forget them either, it seems their passion remains with you. Anton will journey on.

Both photo's above reflect the type of guy he was, layed back and smiling.
My heart goes out to those he was closest to. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Anthony Fricker makes videos about extreme longboard skating. He was filming with what the papers call "a small support crew" when he collided with another skateboarder at terrifying speed on a mountain road.

They were wearing helmets, doing 70k, whistling down the road, when Anthony miscalculated and whacked into his mate.

He died on Sunday, of head injuries, two days after his accident.

The clips on his website show you how much fun the sport can be, and how much the culture relies on untrammelled youthful invincibility.

Such a waste.

Nicky Ruscoe, the development producer at Iris Pictures, emailed us with this informal tribute to Anthony.

"By chance, I met Anthony at AIDC this year and bought him a drink at the bar. He sidled up to the group I was with and said hello. He said he was on his own and didn't know anybody so I chatted to him for a while about documentary making. He was there to promote longboard skateboarding and was hoping to meet with National Geographic.

I have to say that he was a delightful young man and made an impression on me because of his graciousness, maturity and enthusiasm. At 22, he funded his own trip to Adelaide to attend a conference where he know no-one.

He had a passion and he followed it. Braver than most."

Requiescat in Pacem, Anthony Fricker.
