Open Downhill Skateboarding

For Open Downhill Skateboarding ASRA is introducing a new race format for the qualifiers. We call it the "triple-tree". It works as follows.

Instead of every rider having two timed runs, each rider will have only one timed run. That run will be used to seed the riders into two trees; one with odd-numbered seeds and the other with even-numbered seeds.

After those two trees have been run, the top 30 riders from each tree will have qualified - they're in the finals. The winner of the odd tree is seeded No.1, the winner of the even tree is seeded No.2, the second place in the odd tree is seeded No.3, and so on.

The riders who have finished in places 31-62 are not out of it yet. They go into the "repecharge tree". Once that tree has been run the four finalists will qualify in the final four spots of the 64-man finals tree.

The finals will be run the same as every other IGSA event.

We're excited about this format. It reduces the time the track is used for one rider at a time, and replaces it with more 4-man racing. For each rider the second timed run is replaced by from two to seven 4-man races.

We also think it will be a very fair system. Riders who get knocked out in the first round of the odd/even trees will still have a chance to qualify via the repecharge tree. The timed run is used to separate riders who are knocked out in the same round.

  • Women's Downhill Skateboarding - Finals format to be determined based on the number of riders. The Open Downhill triple-tree will be used as the qualifiers.

  • Junior Downhill Skateboarding - Finals format to be determined based on the number of riders. The Open Downhill triple-tree will be used as the qualifiers.

  • Street Luge - The format will be similar to the Open Downhill Skateboarding. Refer to the diagram below.

  • Classic Luge - The format will be similar to the Open Downhill Skateboarding. Refer to the diagram below.

  • Downhill Inline - Format to be determined based on the number of riders. The triple-tree format will not be used.

I think it'll be OK, though don't quote me on it. Pete Smith is the guy with answers on "site" questions.

I believe there will be quite a large tent provided for rider shade/chill-out space.

Just a question regarding the use of tents/shelters on the top of the track. Last year there were a few for crew, is it cool to bring them up and set-up in the same area on the track?

The practice times are approximate at this stage, and are just a guide. The idea is give everybody a minimum of four practice runs on each day they practice. If anything, the current time allocations are a bit tight for the skateboarders.

New format doesn't really effect my racing anyway, but I'm happy with anything that means more runs. Would like to see the extra track time evenly distributed amongst riders and disciplines though.
Comment by Shane Madeley on October 23, 2010 at 19:58
As long as practice goes smooth so everyone get a few runs in before the timed run this format should work well.
Let's hope Friday runs real smooth and sets up a great weekend of fun and speed.
Oh one question what happens if it snows :P

The basic event schedule is now available:

We also have a super-duper detailed schedule that specifies the order of each round of each event:

Ramon, your seeding in the final 64 is determined by your placing in the triple-tree. If you screw up your single timed qualifying run you can still end up being seeded No. 1, but it will be a little more difficult because you'll have a poor seeding in the triple-tree. The definition of "qualifiers" has changed - qualifiers now includes your single timed run AND the triple-tree.

Owen, last year the answer was no; only people who were still in the race on Day 3 got to practice on Day 3. I think it will be the same this year.
Comment by Robbo on September 30, 2010 at 19:26
Owen not likely, would prefer those that are in the finals to get as many practice runs as possible on finals day rather than us having to organise every registered rider on the hill.
Comment by Robbo on September 30, 2010 at 18:01
easier to do lots of qualifiers on a long track where people don't crash as hard.
Comment by Raymondo on September 30, 2010 at 15:21
What if you screw up your one and only qualifying run? Remember what happened at the Graveyard Call Jacko, where people screwed up two qualifying runs? Usual top qualifiers that screwed up will get seeded with regular top qualifiers...I think you know the outcome well ;)

I like the format. But 2 qualifying runs are still not a waste of time. Especially since Bathurst is only half as long as most other tracks...

will people that have been knocked out of the racing on day 2 be able to ride on day 3 at practice.

it looks like theres only one person who is unhappy with this tree, everyone else is stoked on it!
dunno what your dribbling on about mate, this format is super epic. if you actually go to races you would know how boring it is waiting around for everyone to do the qualify runs, and its shit for spectators... they sit and wait... "oh look here comes one!" .....waiting.... "oh cool another one..." ..........so on and so forth.

this format gives people more time on the hill, more time to figure out the proper strategy which is racing. sure it helps to qualify well because it gives you a good spot in the tree but dude if your gonna win u gotta beat everyone there so your starting position doesn't mean much unless it rains... which brings me to the next point, race in the rain bitches! we can all do it, if you think its dangerous then sit down, dont hurt yourself no one is forcing you to.

there has been an epic saying that has been floating around the world that gets repeated by every single person who attends IGSA races, and that saying is: IGSA - Its Great Sitting Around (or 'I Get Stoned Alot, actually once i heard International Goat Sex Association) but it goes to show people are bored with the format... no one likes sitting around and everyone has been on the case to change it to make it more interesting, and you are the only person against it. the new format is rad, its just how it should be and i think we should all be proud that Australia is setting bench marks in how events should be run, eventually more event organizers will follow Australian standards and people will be more enticed to attend IGSA events

keep up the good work ASRA

Hi Abdil, thanks for your support. Our schedule will look something like this:

Friday - practice and timed qualifying run
Saturday - practice and the 3 layers of the triple tree, ie, the odd tree, even tree and repecharge tree
Sunday - practice and the traditional IGSA final system
Comment by Abdil Mahdzan on September 20, 2010 at 9:44
Sakamoto, I think Bugs has addressed your concerns regarding the new format. I am open to anything that will be beneficial for all parties involved, i.e. more runs for the riders done in a fair and systematic way, more racing action for the spectators who are expecting a good show, and less pressure on ASRA to put on a top notch quality event and satisfy as many people as possible!

ASRA has discussed this new format at length with the IGSA and it was the IGSA's suggestion to use the triple tree.

I don't know about you, but I've raced in Europe plenty of times where the "traditional" IGSA format is used, and we street lugers have been at the mercy of the weather because if there is a forecast for rain, the hot and dry days are priority given to downhill skateboarding. We got lucky at Almabtrieb, Graveyard, and Padova since everyone got 2 qualifying runs. However, those who went to Insul and Kosakov were not so lucky. At Insul, everyone got 2 qualifying runs but street luge got rained out on the last day (finals). At Kosakov, everyone across all disciplines got 2 qualifying runs done within in 1 day, looking for a window of opportunity to race the next 2 days but both days got rained out on. So final results went by the best qualifying time.

So to summarize, I am assuming the format will be run like this:

Friday - 1 timed qualifying run (layer 1 of the triple tree)
Saturday - Odds and evens bracket racing (layer 2 of the triple tree)
Sunday - "Traditional" final IGSA bracket racing (layer 3 of the triple tree)

For street luge, since the numbers now are looking less than 32, it looks like everyone will be racing in the finals on Sunday anyway. Instead of a 2nd qualifying run, you have a chance to improve upon your qualifying time by racing for final position. Some people have claimed that they race better than they qualify (sometimes people get unlucky and crash in both qualifying runs!).

so good... sounds like it will run so much faster than last year.

If you like the "new" format, Henry, thats great, not everyone does though. The points raised are valid, so the questions were asked....no biggy.
