Ian, I'd recommend any of the Skaterbuilt or Sk8kings Axe decks, with a wheelbase of about 20-21". Get a Tracker RTS for the back truck and a Bennett Vector for the front truck, and some 70mm 80a slalom wheels. Probably cost you around $300 brand new.
It's always good to ride a bunch of other people's setups first to see what you like, but you can't go wrong with my advice above. Your Hustler won't work for slalom - too long.
If moneys short, you can very successfully cut down a kickflipping or pool board, they usually have nice concave and a kick to lock the back foot in. Just need to cut down the front nose a little and redrill some truck mount holes. Then you just need trucks and wheels and can upgrade the board later. Lots of very fast riders on boards like these. Effective, cheap and fun!
I had a good time cutting down an old pool board and making wedges. Just keep changing specs when your happy find a board close to what you built. Sk8kings seem to be good and have an affordable range. Danny
