I'm no serious skater so I don't think I need to take the time/money/effort to stick tyres to the bottom of my shoes. the only problem is that my skate shoes are getting trashed by footbraking. I'd like to know what kind of shoes or whatever people use because using skate shoes seems too expensive and mine are wearing through. I was thinking of getting some random second hand ones from a salvos branch or something...

Yeah If i did have the money and was not buying tyre soles i would either Get Nikes or Vans they are the best skate shoes i have seen for wear and tear i have a pair of 6.0 but i had to put a tyre on them because they were about to break through.
car tyre on dunlops is the best way gives lots of flex and very cheap to make can get free tyre from and tyre shop
Gd ideas thanks. I don't know why I never thought about sticking tyres on some cheap shitty shoes like volleys. Where do I get the free tyres?

Cheers
Go to Clark Rubber dude, you have 2 or 3 options.

The equivalent of rogers bros rubber which is a soft compound shredded rubber which has been glues back together. This stuff is lightweight, has a low heat retention but also low durability. Good for ride days but will wear quickly if you walk around everyday on it. On a good surface with light to moderate footbraking it might last 4-6 weeks, on a meatgrinding surface it might last 2-3 runs depending on how much you footbrake. The stuff is 6mm thick and you can get it for about $50 for 6mm x 1m x 2m at about $1.50 a sole

Or you buy a very hard compound neoprene at 6mm thick which is identical to car tyre but without the tread and you avoid stripping car tyre apart. This stuff is used for things like truck mudflaps and comes threaded or unthreaded. you may need to use a small router or grinder to cut some tread into it. This stuff will last a long time in all conditions but will heat up when in use and give that impressive line of smoke behind your foot. For 6mm x 280mm x 1m you will pay about $25 which should give you about 6 foot soles.

There are also other rubber options at this place I am yet to fully test out.
if you have the problem of wearing out your soles becasue of footbreaking then you are a serious skater and need to take the time/effort/money to stick tyres or footbreaks to your shoes.

If you dont have the time/effort/money to stick stuff on your shoes then your not a skater so dont skate... its one or the other buddy... Either way, you ride a skateboard and eventually your shoes will shred, its what happens.

If its not breaking your not using it

My latest retreads, cost app $8-$10 per shoe, (depends on the current price of the rubber)
but i reckon i'll get 20,000km of footbraking out of them.
If anyones interested i'll see if i can get some more retread, with the weight of the rubber,
2 soles fit in a 3kg express post satchel, app $11.
holy shit dude r u riding a skateboard or a streetluge??
Hahaha, platform shoes for skating. Be great if you could make them out of transparent rubber, then you could have some goldfish in em to.
i sure as hell wouldn't want that much rubber between my foot and my board.
Spend some time and get the tread off a tyre. Your shoes will last for years. I have a pair that I still wear from 2005.
cheap skate shoes at kmart for 25 bucks. just bought some the other day. they dont look too bad, and once i wear the sole through, slap some tire on and it lasts ages
yeah, mine are still going strong after about a year of solid footbraking. all it took was an old pair of skate shoes and an abandoned tyre i found on the side of the road. i don't get why your worried about spending money on this aspect of longboarding when it only costs an old pair of shoes and $15 for the glue. and its more effort and money to have to find and buy suitable shoes that will only last every few months, than it is to spend 30mins cutting tread of a free tyre in front of the TV, knowing you won't have to do it again for a year or 2.
