Montacute becomes a road surfers paradise

DAREDEVIL teens on skateboards are illegally road surfing down steep main roads at Montacute, putting their lives and those of motorists at risk.
Hills Fleurieu Police have stepped up patrols of Montacute and Corkscrew roads, having already reported one teenager on an oversized skateboard two weeks ago.
Police traffic manager Sergeant Brian Schmidt said road surfing was “very dangerous and potentially disastrous”.
Morialta MP Lindsay Simmons called for No Skateboarding signs to be erected on the roads after several locals complained to her about the danger.
“Already there have been some near misses, which is why it was brought to my attention,” she told the East Torrens Messenger.
“One particular person was driving up the hill when one of the kids was coming down and this person was forced to slam on their breaks and swerve to miss the kid.”
According to Australia road rules, it is illegal to ride a skateboard on major roads with a continuous or broken centre-line or dividing strip or on roads divided into marked lanes for traffic going in the same direction.
Ms Simmons said the potential for a serious accident was “extremely high” because the skateboarders, who often came down the hill crouched or lying on their boards, often used the middle of the road.
“These roads have lots of twists and turns which makes them really popular for this kind of thing, but it also means cars cannot see the skateboarders coming down the hill. Apparently lying down is the brave thing to do, because you can’t stop very easily.
“It’s so dangerous it’s not what the roads were designed for.”
Ms Simmons has called for road signs in a letter to Road Safety Minister Michael O’Brien, who said he’d referred the matter to his department for further advice.
“This type of unsafe activity on the open road is extremely dangerous, not only to the skateboarders travelling at relatively high speeds, but also to the motorists using these roads,” Mr O’Brien said.
Residents who see skateboards being ridden illegally should ring the police on 131444.

Hey thats our hill!! wow didnt realise we were making such a fuss. maybe they should be focusing on all the cars and motorbikes doing 100 in the 80 zones rather than the occasional skateboarder!!! i dunno wat they are talkin about we always stick to the left and never cross over the lines. HAHAHA where did road surfing come from. rofl lying down, hmm maybe some more research needs to be done...

Its a shame that this is the sort of close minded people that Downhill Skateboarding is up against. Obviously there has been no research or attempt to hear the other side of the story.
Its really hard to take such an article seriously when its clear that the writer is just making stuff up and also can not even spell.
The problem we face is that joe average reads this drivel and believes it.

Australians in my book are officially the biggest whingers in the world. If you wanted to improve on road safety you would get rid of all powerpoles or put in poles that fall over on impact , you would clear all highways of trees for at least 50 metres. These two small things would save thousands of lives in Australia . The motor car has surpassed all other causes of death including cancer to become the biggest dealer of pain and suffering but we are hooligans ........Love your idea Judge K just use a payphone ...

i argued with that cop for about half an hour we went through everything i told him he could fine me but he cant stop it and he said thats fair enough, this is one of my favourite locations and dare say i will be bombing it again verry soon, catch us if you can

Removing the trees and power poles has some bad side effects. It makes the road seem a lot safer to people in cars, so they drive faster and take more risk. Even if the amount of extra risk they take is less than the extra safety from the lack of trees/poles, it transfers the risk to other road users such as pedestrians and skaters.
The best road safety device for non-motorists would be a sharp spear sticking out of the steering column of every car. You'd see some very careful driving.
