I may have discovered the best way to deal with road rash. It's a product called either Tegaderm or IV3000 and it's a very thin transparent membrane that you place directly over the wound. You leave it on for up to a week, and it's waterproof and you can shower in it etc.

It keeps the wound moist so it doesn't form a scab. Road cyclists use it (they have long and extensive experience with road rash).

If you buy it from the chemist it's very expensive (about $5 for one piece), but a pack of 100 costs about $100. I've found myself a supply and am currently testing it out. So far so good.

i've been looking around my local pharmacies but don't seem to be able to find iv 3000 or tegaderm anywhere.

right now what i do is just clean the rash with some mild soap water, dry it, place a thin layer of petroleum jelly to stop the the dressing from sticking and just tape some gauze onto it. i change it everytime i shower. takes awhile to heal though...

ive read that using antiseptic on the wound actually slows the healing process but does it really have a significant impact on healing?
wow this is all high tec stuff, i just cleane it then leave it to scab.
yeah my mate does is a tat artist and swears by glad wrap and antiseptic for loss of bark, its cheap and works really well
My recent experience tells me that Opsite isn't quite permeable enough; I'd get big bags of pus forming under it that would eventually force the dressing open and leak pus everywhere. IV3000 was better; I'd get smaller bags of pus that would thicken and become reabsorbed quicker/better, but without drying out and becoming scabby.

You can buy 100-packs of IV300 from Ebay for about $100. Or find a type-1 diabetic who uses an insulin pump - they'll have a stash.
