ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

I think its about time we organised some sort of VISIBLE event combining Slalom, 'Downhill' and some freerideing/sliding. I am really keen to get some sort of thing going as i think it could help grow the sport here and put out a positive image of skateboarding in general which is always a good thing. I am interested in what you guys think of the idea i would love to see an event like this and i think there are enough people who could compete to make it interesting and fill up a days racing.

You organise it. People will come.
who wants to do it this weekend?
i like ur attitude its great we have people like yourselves ready to get things happening. the scene is growing and each crew is working hard to lift the profile of the sport.
now theres a few things you need to take into account here when running a race. Firstly you say for a downhill race you dont want too gnarly of a hill because people wont be able to keep up with the faster people, but then again you want people to travel to come to your race. SO you dont want a shit hill coz people will be pissed that they traveled all that way to race a gay hill... solution: make the slower people step it up. Say "here you go we are having a race i know this hill might be a bit out of your league to race on but you learn from experience so step it up brother" and pull the race on the gnarliest hill you can find. The gnarlier the hill the better the rep and the more people will travel. i garuentee you dudes will still come to attend even if they know they have no shot in winning, a race is a race and if you give the people an event they will come.
Now the next thing you would wanna look at is if your going to do it out-law or organized. If your going to do it outlaw GET A BACKUP HILL, or even 2 backup hills... chances are the even will get shut down and you will be moved on (and if people get fined you use entry fees to pay those fines, entry fees can be like $5 or $10...)
if you wanna organize the event properly, this will take time. u need to talk to local councils and ask for permission to shut the road. this could be the most difficult thing to do. ASRA has insurance for these sorts of things and can help you out but remember, ASRA is not here to organize an event for you. they can help you with guidance and help you get the ball rolling and stuff but please do not get something started and then unloaded to them.
Otherwise a freestyle or slopestyle event is a good idea, this could be a lot easier as you dont need to close off big sections of roads. just find a couple of good spots. a nice steep slide hill for freestyle and a couple of hairpin corners for bust out your moves on. you could make it a two day event, slopestyle one day and outlaw on the next. gives everyone a chance to really skate and skate with other people even if they dont do well in the race.
The next thing is sponsorship, once things start to take off and the events look like they are happening you would need to find some sort of sponsorship otherwise your going to dish out money from your own pocket. If there is an event, there will be winners. these winners need prizes and trophies (or medals) and all that shit. or you could just chuck in money and make it cash, either way, dudes need to be rewarded with goodies if they do well.
weather or not you want to mix it up with slalom is your call, but i would focus more on the longboarding side of things.

hope all goes well, if u got any questions let me know
good writeup jacko, thanks for the advice. and Sean, i have exams coming up so i wont be able to go out to skate for a few weeks until they are over.
no need to rush into it sean. do some research on google maps, go scope out hills see if the roads are ride-able. no point having a race on a 400m stretch of road it'll just be another weekend session. try looking for something longer to make it worth while. Although Chirny would be a good location for a slide/freestyle comp like Jacko said. Maybe start with that?

Also, if you're planning on an outlaw i wouldnt wanna reveal your potential spots so publicly just yet :)
ok i say after newtons we go organise something. DH and Slopestyle/slide comp or maby not the DH. Locations in mind 'mount dandenong, Chirnside park, Edge water/that general area' all have potential for some sort of DH and sliding going down on them, Dandy is a good bet as there are tons of back up hills there, chirnside is easy low traffic and no one would care, Edge water has lots of dif things going on in that area so if we get shut down we can move easily and quickly though the hills are not as good as dandy
one of my main points of advice however, do not talk about or organize this on forums. not only because of the obvious legal reasons and people catching on and all that, but i guarantee that more work will get done if you actually get together with your crew and really work it out, write things down and make the phone calls.
Trust me, its all good intentions and its great for people to throw in their ideas and two cents on here but just like every other forum on this site suggesting a race, nothing really gets done. you have to allocate your own time and effort to make it happen, not just put up a bunch of ideas of the net and try to string them all together. organizing events is not an easy task its a long and tiresome process but the outcomes are great. i spend a lot of time working with people who do all these awesome events for ASRA and skateboarders so i hear a lot of what goes into them and what comes out of them, and its hectic as fuck.
Im not trying to discourage you here so please don't take this the wrong way, but if you can get something like this happening you will be doing a great thing and making great accomplishments. take your time and don't rush it and if your serious about getting this done then really stick by it 100% and it will happen.
as others have said...if you build it, we will attend.

slopestyle contests....we haven't had a proper one in aus. yet have we? def. have to get one happening.
for the hills we have slopestyle is probobly the most viable event we could run as there is no hardcore downhill we could have a race at (there is like one hill thats up to scratch to have a proper race on) but there is plenty of nice slopestyle grade hills that are great to drift and slide all through the state. I got a few spots that i am gonna have to really sus out with a few guys and see whats the go in their oppinion
