board building... veneers/ where do the australian builders get there materials from?

i have been sending emails around, making phone calls to all the local timber mills/ manufacturers and the best price I have got so far is $105.00 for a sheet of 2400x1200x1.5mm of hoop pine. thats more expensive than just buying a board, not including any other materials eg, tools, glue and press.

im starting to think that the only option is to source from an overseas supplier, so any info on where you get your MATERIALS from, I would be extremely thankful :D

so after more emails, phone calls and exploring the net i have found what may be a really good place to by uncut canadian veneers and only $40 for their largest "kit" enough to make a nice sized longboard :D

http://www.australianskateboardkits.com/#! hope this helps anyone else having as much trouble as i have trying to source materials

Hey Adam - welcome to the search! - I've recently ordered some uncut veneer kits from the guys you mention - Belinda at ASK has been really helpful - I too had been using 1.5mm hoop pine ply and the price had climbed from around $70 18 months ago to $98 for a 2400x1200 sheet, so it was a huge relief to find the guys at ASK with the right stuff at a reasonable price.

Not too sure how often they import the Canadian Rock Maple but it's been dispatched today apparently - 4 kits at $40 per kit (7 sheets per kit) and $38 for courier because Aus Post wont do post for anything over 1 metre long.  I was gonna let the LB building group know what it was like once I received it.

It should be pretty good, It comes from the roarockit guys in canada, these guys are their aussie dealer. A great option if you only want enough veneer for a few boards. Upsize the kit though, especially if your building a dh or freeride board, get 9 or 10 sheets, 7 will likely be too flexy..

cheers Steve - yep definitely more sheets - probably use CF or glass as well.

got a reply from them with freight costs they are (for the biggest sheets like steve said, for the downhill board i have made the mould for) is $51 for 3 sets or $57 for 5 "sets".

very stoked right now i think thats a fair price and i got a speedy reply from them.

Veneer arrived safe and sound this afternoon - looks great and keen to get started if it would fuggen cool down in Melbourne!
