The most important "events" in the history of downhill and slalom in Australia

Well, what do you think - what are the most important events in the history of downhill and slalom? This question has been asked by a friend who's making a skate documentary, and I said I'd help, and now I'm asking everybody to help.

Here's some guidelines:

* an event can be anything - a race, a person, a website, a shop, a bust, an organisation, a death, a discovery of a spot, a visit by an overseas pro etc.

* the event can be positive or negative

* I need a date for when it happened.

I'm particularly interested in things that happened prior to 2005, cos I wasn't around then.

Ramon Vs Jackson Sidonia Fuckin Epic  has to be best slalom moment for me.Although the race in the rain was pretty memorable.

Everything that people have dredged up totally resonates with me too.

That weekend in December 2005 of OST downhill & Allawah slalom was a big moment in the history. Here's the shonky writeup of the slalom.

Yeah how weird was it. After being thrashed by Jacko time and again, everyone really wanted him to win that day against Ramon. :p

I remember the awkward moment when Ramon stopped the rider's meeting to tell us that we were doing stuff all wrong, and how you saved the day by saying "Welcome to Australia, Ramon!".

I just found this gem from the NCDSA vault. The entire thread dates back to 2001. It was in the regional Asia/Pacific forum. Australia was so low in the worldwide scheme of longboarding we didn't even get our own area.

Just got back from the best sk8 i have ever had on a longboard it was south of sydney at a place called Mt kiera.Its about 3-4ks long and just constant bend after bend.Cars keept abusing us saying we where mad and do you want to die.Half way down an abulance passes to pick up a motor cyclist who took on a car and lost.We cruised past the mayhem and it was,nt a good vibe at all.We where all on Abec 11 wheels and there where no complaints at all in that department(these wheels are fark n hot)There is alot of places to sk8 in the area with less cars its just a matter of going out and searching for them.

I checked out Allawah this morning and its by far the best spot I've seen so far in Sydney for slalom.
It's a bike track, very wide, smoothly paved, with a couple of hills as well as some flatter sections.

Where is it: Kempt Field, on the north side of Allawah train station in Allawah, which is close to Hurstville, Kogarah, and Carlton.

How to get there:
1. Take the train. Allawah is just six stops south of Central station on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawara lines. But be careful, i am informed Allawah is a minority station so not all trains will stop there.
2. Drive. Check out the map link above!

When: 12 noon. I'll probably be there a bit earlier to set a course or two and check out the scene. 

Hopefully some people will make it. This is a good spot to just cruise, practice slides, run cones, whatever.

Contact Josh Hope, Steven Daddow, and other riders in OZ. I'll get ahold of Adam and his brother Scott. I am doing Toy shows in Tazmania and then Darwin until Sept. 5th. I would then like to do a slide clinic in Queensland first and follow that with another one in the Sydney area. We should definately do some fun rides. Seeing documentary of the first bathurst race on regular TV, before i even knew what it was.

Scoring a discarded 46 inch pin tail out of the skip bin after it wasn't claimed from the schools lost property for 18 months.

Discovering Yvon labarthes vimeo channel, and watching he gravyard call video where scoot races micho in the final.

Picking up and actually touching Joe Brown's glyde drop down deck.

 

I know they are not old but they are the most important moments for me personally

ooh i remember another one, back in the day of 9 wide world of sports there was coverage of a downhill race, i think it was mount cootha from memory. i ws still in early high school maybe late 88-92 ish, i can remember the house i was in but not the year,

i can remeber that there was this french guy with a low center of gravity tuck with hands out in front of him and the rest doing a standard bent at the hips tuck., they were all trying to air brake into corners and eating it and the french guy was staying low grabbing rail and sort of sliding around them. 

my memory is sketchy as i was a real grom at the time and all we were interested in was surfing and vision streat wear....hahaha.

For me it was Panorama Punks on TV. in 2008

I cant recall seing anything like it on maintream TV befor or after.

It reignitet my intrest in skateboarding, and many more im sure.

Downhill and Slalom were known by a relativly small number of people and this Documentry and Newtons Playground put it out there for all of Australia to see.

Still waiting for Ten to replay it here. Still on reguly in QLD

If it was a French guy, it would of been Manu at the Arthurs Seat/Melbourne X-Games, Adam. From memory I don't think Manu did the Mt Cootha event. These events were in the late '90's, with Biker, Todd Lehr, Waldo Aultry, Lee Dansie, etc. These guys were lugers doing cross-over, pushing the DH scene.
