Don't look cool wearing a helmet.....certainly didn't look too cool without it.

Natural selection. Pure and simple.

You can't blame natural selection. If you are going to do that then you have to go all the way. If your mother get's cancer, natural selection, brother gets bottled in the street, natural selection. If you get hit by a car, natural selection... It doesn't exist with humans generally anymore and a skater without a helmet has nothing to do with natural selection.

I think ur getting natural selection mixed up with plain old "shit happens". Natural selection is survival of the fittest where the strongest survive. Seeings how as humans, we have mastered our environment, strength no longer factors in as much as intelligence does, rather it is survival of the smartest with strength playing into it as a result. For clarification, I will show how your examples factor in...

1. Your mother gets Cancer: If she got cancer from smoking 2 packs a day knowing full well of the risks, thats natural selection. If she fights it and wins, thats Natural Selection in her favour as she's proven survival of the fittest. Regardless of whether she wins or loses the battle, it's a combo of natural selection through intelligence as well as strength (in the way of her body fighting the cancers with the help of meds etc, as well as her mind working to refuse to give up). If she got cancer due to environmental or hereditary causes, the same principals of natural selection will be applied as she is now fighting for her right to live.

2. Brother gets bottled in the street: If he got bottled as a result of walking through, lets say, Claymore at 2am by choice, that would play into the intelligence side of natural selection, much the same way as the strength aspect of it would play into it as he lays in hospital and his body tries to recover. If he got bottled through no fault of his own, you still have natural selection playing it's part as his body and mind cope with the trauma.

3. You get hit by a car: If you got hit by a car because you didn't look both ways before crossing the street, or you were distracted by a nudie pic your insanely hot girlfriend just sent you, this is natural selection through intelligence. If you were longboarding through sydney tunnel at peak hour and a car took you out by 'accident' this too would be natural selection through intelligence, if the same car hit you 'on purpose', this would still fall under natural selection through intelligence as you knew it was highly risky riding there. If a car had struck you on purpose on a quiet street with high visibility everywhere, this would fall under the 'shit happens' category initially, but if your injuries were severe, it would now fall under natural selection through strength, his body needs to recover.

To understand how natural selection factors in, you need to identify not only 'what happened', but 'why' it happened.

If you were chilling at home watching TV and a plane fell out of the sky and directly took out your house, this would fall into the 'shit happens' category, not natural selection.

So Dani, now that you understand what natural selection is at its core, re-watch the video and tell me that both his intelligence and body played no factor in his incident.

Although I understand your point your understanding of natural selection is wrong; at least according to Darwin and Wallace. It’s essentially a cop out to refer to someone’s death as 'natural selection'. Evolution refers to a specific trait and or characteristics of a species and their relationship with their environment. In this sense the most successful species is not the strongest or the most intelligent but instead the species with the greatest ability to change and adapt. You refer to us as mastering our environment but what if our environment changes, which it does, every day. Our ‘strength’ as a species relies on our ability to adapt to this change. Saying that the 'strongest survive' only refers to a single trait and completely overlooks the intention of natural selection.

Natural selection is a gradual process and for this reason applying the 'Natural selection' argument to an individual is void and so are all of your examples. Looking at a single example of someone with cancer or a person who dosn't wear a helmet is irrelevant. Instead, Focus on our species response and ability to change. Instead of rolling over and continuing to die we have chosen to research and focus on these issues in a productive manner. As a result we have produced treatments and helmets. This is natural selection.

Ironically what you are referring to is actually “shit happens.”
