charliedontskate is where to go !
pacific mountain ash is the closest to rock maple little heavier though
you can get small vac bags with hand pumps & foam to make the moulds from CARBATEC industrial supplies
same as what was shown in concrete wave !

I use Hoop Pine 4mm 3 ply and its great. Fairly flexy but still strong. I've yet to have a board break on me.
Epoxy is probably the cheapest glue you can get easily. Titebond III is rediculously expensive.
I made a couple of boards for a school project last year as well, of you need any advice PM me.

that is helpful advice in my opinion i mean personaly i don't really like spending more than the price of paper for my school projects, and birch/maple/bamboo veneers arn't easy to come across,
how ever, he could go down to bunnings and buy himself some 3 ply
btw the fat kid at my greek school has like 4 ferraris and 30 gran spending money to clear things up
will try to be more helpful next time ;)
