ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Well I have just finished the rest of my training and I am now an official fire fighter in the D.E.H (national parks) brigade. During my training I learnt a little something that I thought was quite interesting so I am going to share.

You all know those irritating little blue cats eyes that make a fast run a little more interesting, well they actually have a use. Who knew. If you have a blue cats eye on the side of the centre white line then 90 degrees to that just off the edge of the road is either a fire hydrant or a man whole cover containing fitting so that we can install our own hydrant. So if a fire appliance is driving down the road in thick black smoke with no visibility all they have to do is look for a blue cats eye and that is there water source. Genius huh? I thought that was a kewl little thing to know.

well done danny, next time im bombin hills through a burning nantional forrest with thick black smoke and raging fires around me i'll know what to look out for, cheers mate
Its a pleasure Jacko, if I can be of any more assistance let me know. Maybe if your just really thirsty one day you could crack open a cold hydrant with some mates.
i thought they marked the way to your endless feilds of magic mushies.
thats the white ones, get with it Ben.
Really? Every little blue cats eye? That is pretty damn interesting i reckon.

Where i grew up we had no road markings (no white lines) just cats eyes. Does the same rule still apply? I'm going to have to check that shit out next time i'm up there.

Good on ya for completing your training mate. Quick question for you - To become a parks officer is the fire fighting training compulsory or did you just want to have some extra skills up your sleeve?
Yea it's a national system so no matter where you are in the country blue eyes mean water. To become a parks ranger you would be pretty damn lucky to get the job without fire training and alot of experience on the fire ground. Im not a range I am an interpretive researcher meaning I spend half of my work time within the colony doing research (autopsy, microchipping, weighing, cutting entanglements ect) and the other half of my work time inerpreting the results to the public so fire was not a neccesity for me. Just something I have wanted to do for a long time.
thinkin about it ya right, pump stations got em and theres a big mofo water pipe runnin beside the road with ports along it!
can you get me a job there. I can start fires ..
Yeah, I always wondered about the blue cats eyes at Pump St. I just assumed they were there to mark the middle of the road, which seemed a bit unnecessary for such a minor road in the middle of nowhere. Glad I discouraged people from chiselling em off. The fire dept would have noticed quickly cos they use that road for training. Thanks Dani, you're at the corner of the fire dept and skateboarding.
Daddow you would have loved the last 3 days then. We have been lighting fires with these awesome flame throwers and drip torches. FUN.
I just joined the CFS and found out about the hydrants being near cats eyes a couple of weeks ago
A job where you get paid to use flame throwers. Thats cool
