ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

So this may have been discussed but I have done a search and can only find stuff on helmets.

I have seen footage of all sorts of crashes Daddows roll at newtons 09, dudes getting to their knees and sliding on the pads specifically, (landy 925 you tube vid) and others.

When I have crashed I have tended to end up either taking a few steps and just sliding along on my front with my gloves out in front, or another time I ended up on my shoulder sliding along and moved back to the
hands out in front push up position.

So I have ended up with hip and rib grazes and at times my knee pads slide down my legs in this position and I end up with knee scrapes. Tighten up the top Velcro strap?

So is there anything you can think of to help me and others how to minimise damage even when in full safety gear. (don’t fall off, haha)

I always have a helmet and glove.

Almost always have knee, elbow pads

I now have leathers

I know you only have a millisecond to react but is it better to roll, (daddow at newtons 09) commit to the knee pad plant (landy 925 you tube vid)

or is there some stunt man skill I should know about.

I just think this could be a really good thing to be discussed with heaps of new people starting up and the “safety class benbro is doing” safety class in Newcastle.

Cheers adam.

depends on the nature of the crash. rolling will always leave you subject to more damage than sliding on you front or side. but if its the best option at the time (like it was for daddow) then it needs to be done.
planting the knees is something i've only ever seen dudes do when screwing up heelside standies. thats the only time i would commit to that.
i normally try to slide on my gloves and toes but you cant always get into that position
yeah gloves and toes are what you want to get to as soon as possible
Good question Adam.
From what I learnt from my parkour background is forward vs downwards motion. The point behind falling safely onto a hard surface its to transfer your downward motion to a forward motion (hence the rolling).

So relating that to skateboarding is, whilst falling at speed (greater forward motion), pucks down and knee-pads / feet slide is the best option. When crashing at a low speed, ROLL!!. Don't put your palm (pucks) out to take the impact (remembering your downward motion is greater than your forward motion) as it's an invitation to a broken wrist.

Learning to roll on a hard surface, you will still bruise and graze until you get the technique down, but i highly recommend it. It has saved my skin several times (including yesterday).
Maybe check out a Parkour course or go to a Jam, as one of the first things you learn is the roll.
Try to get as low as you can for the crash so that you shut down slide. If you fail your shutdown slide at least you know you will slide on your knees and hands. Thats my shutdown slide atleast where i put my hands out the front on the ground and push against the toeside rail to bring my board adjacent to the direction im going. Dont bail standing up and try to run it off. Probably the worse thing you can do...
just try get your pads down asap, knee slides or sliding on your heels/toes with gloves down save your skin bad, just try put something other then yoru flesh on the ground first
leigh's right, rolling is usually not the best way to crash, if you can get into some sort of slide ie on gloves, pads, shoes, whatever, you will usually be safer than if you are rolling, you get less injuries and there is also an element of control i suppose.

being an athletic, coordinated, fit person will always be a benifit in a crash, being agile enough to get yourself in the right position givin the circumstance,
being a stuntman probably even a bigger benefit when it comes to a crash.
after you have a few crashes that put you out of action for a while and plenty of minor incidents, you definately learn to crash better, and less... also from riding experience you start to learn where your more likely to crash and know how to take the preventitive actions,eg,staying low thru sketchy corners, hand ready to puck down if you lose traction.etc.
you should never be thinkin about crashing while riding, just knowing wat to do in any given situation....
but there will be the odd time when things happen and no matter who you are you will fall off,
Leather is the safest thing to be crashing in,but replacing them i think draggin jeans are way more effective than knee pads
you dont get your knees or hips or ass or shins exposed to the road because there is always coverage of these areas,i see all the crew dodging gnarly knee and hip grazes coz they are wearing draggins, the boys i see crashing in pads get ripped up still,as the pads just move.....
all though if your crashing fast and you risk impact into stationary objects, spreading yourself on the road to get some resistance in order to slow your momentum is vital....you may lose heaps of skin but better than carrying speed into a gnarly crash.........thats the idea of leathers.
I hit cats eyes that i did not see and went down to the push up kinda thing, hip, ribs scrape, and knee pad slid down and meant that i got a good scrape there too. There was no time to slide cause the board just wobbled off course and just wasn't under my feet anymore, have to add extra velcro to the top knee pad strap so they barstards stay in place.
thanks leigh, trav, benbro etc.

Anyone know of a brand of super shoe laces. Along the lines of draggin jeans. ie super teflon or kevlar etc so they don't get stuffed after one crash.
