ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Well i just got my new hopshop newsletter. for those of you who subscribe you know what im probably going to ask, for those that dont subscribe you should its great

ok anyway
since i started learning hwo to slide i have been grabbing the board in the middle when doing heelsides, i have since learnt this is aclled grabbing stinkbug. i can kinda slide without doing this but definitely cant do a pendy without grabbing and cant do it at speed so much. anyway why is it so bad to do this? i mean if it makes me slide bettter isnt it a good thing?

hmmm jackos photos just loaded and im thinking i might kinda style bug. cause i end up much lower than the red suit guy and more like the bottom guy. Maybe thats just cause hes not got his hand down or something though.
then all u gotta do is get that bag leg lower, get your knee towards the board more and reach around your leg instead of between both of them. grab rail around where your shin is

hmmmm not really. if i worry about it i might mess up and drop and slide on my but but if i concentrate i can normally whip the board around to a complete 180 then pull it back to where i started without any trouble.

and ill try tommorow after school and update you all with news of success or pictures of blood and failure depending on how it goes ;)

also try sliding without grabbing rail, thats why i do and i find it much more controllable and less restrictive. just use your free arm to help swing your shoulders to face the way you want to slide.
i can do that i just slide a dervish and maybe need mroe concave or something because my feet slip off. when i hold it ihave a bit more control over the sldie.

use hard wheels... like 95a and above hard wheels... makes learning to slide SO much easier
im on 86a durians and they are easy as but i coned them :/
ill think about buying something super hard for it but i thought most slide wheels were 65mmish. and i still like to carve around on it so want to keep a bit of grip :)
thanks for the advice though ill have to check if i have a double kicker board i can convert for sliding purposes.
coned wheels are even more fun to slide lol
i dont grab stinkbug anymore but i felt like a gimp learning to slide again this arvo :(

so basically i headed out and just started by sliding at lower speed without grabbig rail but not putting the leg down either. then i focused on getting that leg flat on the board. this proved reallly really hard and i managed to get it either resting against my other leg if i was lucky or just angled, but most of the time it was the side of my foot on the board not my sole if that is good.

i could do shutdown slides allright and tried grabbing infront of my shin which felt better for control in the slide but worse for controll overall if that makes sense. my problem was that i couldnt pendy. i could kind of bring it back to where i started but never all the way like i could stinkbug and not really as fast.
so thanks for converting me before i got to addicted to the stink i guess guys :P

on another note can i have some tips on toeside pendys?
do i grab rail or not, so far my experience with toe side slides is just putting my hands down and doing a big shutdown trying to bring it back without success. towards the end of my 2 hour session on my hill just then i found if i looked over the other shoulder to try and bring my shoulders towards where i wanted to be at the end of the slide it helped a bit but still pretty shaky on it. i saw P-Swiss in a video going 90ks and pulling off a perfect one but i dont really want to try what he did because it looke pretty much impossible below 35k's an hour and i dont have a fullface :/

so anyway any tips would be helpful. ill upload some photos later maybe but my net is still capped and i forgot to take some this arvo. thanks for the help.
man i always stink bug
but i dont when bombing i learnt the hard way
haha
PROPS TO ME WINGMAN WACK-SON. write on. true words on the stinkbug grab. only attempt in times of pure grar and ones own self belief will bring on the true style of STINK. or just do it to write off and have some good times wit ya mates!!!!!!!!!!!!!

on a more serious note to grommy on the post, bra all of what jacko said is spot on, but u dont need to grab your rail. learn to do it with out. truth of the matter is if u relly on grabbing and forcing your rail, u are in turn lifting your outter edge (the side u grab) up and realeasing the contact of your wheels- hence u being able to slide better while grabbing rail. try speed. speed is your frind when u learn to slide/drift and break the contact of ya wheels. line up and turn into it and lean back on your triling hand and push with your feet. get er done.

There is one main reason why it is bad: it restricts the amount your shoulders can turn.
just like all board sports, skating's turning is lead in by your shoulders. If you stood square on with your board with your front shoulder (left shoulder if regular, right shoulder with goofy) pointing down the hill and your back shoulder (right shoulder if regular left shoulder if goofy) and started riding, then twisted your upper board so your front shoulder turns and points a bit to the left, you automatically turn left. Same goes if you twist your body inwards and point that front shoulder to the right, you automatically turn to the right.
Now to the stinkbug part....
If you squat on your board and have both feet FLAT on your board and grab inbetween your legs, you wont be able to twist your shoulders outwards (to the left if you are regular, right if your goofy, this is for heelside turns) as much as you would if you drop your back knee and roll your back foot onto the inside edge of your foot and grab outside of your legs. Doing this allows your upper body to twist and square your shoulders up more and allow you to lean further outwards and point your shoulders more in the direction you want to go. Grabbing stink bug restricts this, and also gives you shit style and you start stinkin up the place, hence the name: Stink bug

HOWEVER! there are exceptions. I have seen people grabbing stink bug and are still able to twist at their shoulders and still maintain the proper stance for turning. All you need to do is roll that back leg inwards and ride on the inside edge of your foot. It is still stinkbug and still kinda looks odd but at least it gets the job done. People who do this may as well grab around the leg but either way they arent looking like they are going to crash all the time.

Examples:

Stink-bug: (note that this is actually the only occasion when grabbing stinkbunk is awesome, coz its yate-dwag)

Good Style:

Style-bug:

best thing for you to do jack, is just keep skating. it doesnt happen over night. go out, get people to film you, go back and review. Look at your own style and make decisions on what works best for you. self assessment is key to learning style. people can give tips in writing over the internet but its no where near as good as someone showing you in person and that too is still no where near as good as watching YOURSELF do them so you can adjust and figure out what your doing wrong.
The more you film yourself and the more you make subtle changes the easier it is to feel your style change, and before you know it you will be able to make changes in the way you ride and feel the difference without even having to look at footage.

so in summary, get off the internet, go out n skate!
