Longboard lessons in Byron bay or brissy... for A trip around Aus...
Hi all names Jason Harmshaw i'm tossing around the idea of doing a self supported longboard trip around the entirity of Australia to raise money for an undecided charity/charities starting here in byron bay. All i'll have is my board, my backpack and about $10,000 (not including extra hardware for blowouts) and a tent. what i really would love is an experienced and hardcore downhill longboard rider to help me out with some lessons . Trips going to take about 4-6 months if i go coastal but probably longer... will pay for the lessons obviously but i only want serious replies because i want to kick off the trip in the next 6-10 months... Closer to the date i will post to see if anyone else is keen for coming along as well or joining up with me along the track also suggestions on nice uncrowded (cars) routes would be great and where to avoid as well bad or dirt roads... suggestions, questions or interested parties send us an email jaso_777@hotmail.com...

Dude! Just skate with the crew every weekend. You will learn. Sounds like a fun trip though. Coming into summer, what about your local volunteer fire fighters. They are always in need of public donations and are a big part of local communities.

thats kind of a big deal. you would have to mod a board to be as close to the ground as possible and get your switch and mongo pushes down pat and get training on those quads. Luggage? a trailer?

Roll rolls sportster would be a great board for the long distance skate(Very low and very light) very expensive tho.

First off, you might want to consider talking to us about your engine and how to maintain it on an endurance trek like this. Then consider who in your support crew will be the first aider/therapist healthcare liason; without being negative you will need one. Diet, fluids, weight checks, stretches, rest periods.

adam colton, paul kent and aaron enevoldsen just skated across peru from lima to potosi in bolivia. maybe try and get loaded or rayne on board for equipment, paul kent would be the man to speak to as far as distance skating goes, by the looks of it he loves a challenge. hope you realise how much planning you will need to put in as far as routes go, there was talk of some long distance skating in the forums recently and the major problem seems to be finding skateable roads that are light on traffic. best of luck mate, im keen to join you around the sydney to nowra stretch if you end up doing it

yeah luggage will be minimal... small gas stove and a few tins of food along with suplement powders gatorade etc for electrolytes. Along, with a small gas stove to cook my good tinned food and noodles on those blamy cold nights. NRMA are hopefully sending me out some maps with all the sealed roads including thier gradients in Australia because i want to avoid busy roads as much as possible but don't want to go off down an anonymous road and end up chewing on some healthy dirt and pot holes it is a skate around aus after all not a walk.

yeah a pommy bloke did from perth to brisbane on a rolls rolls carbon fibre skateboard so it seems like the right board to do it with took him 5 months to do 5800 odd kilometres... averaged 35-40 kilometres per day asssuming he skated 10 hours a day and had 1 day off a week thats only 4-5 kilometres an hour which is an amazing pace if it was all uphill =D

I will get up and have a good talk to you when i know exactly how far and where i'm goign... I believe that a large majority of my preparation and training will be aimed towards upper legs and endurance training. runnign but mostly skating uphills and building my body upto a level that can withstand the surely enjoyable torture that it will endure. My practice route will be from Byron to Ballina 45 minutes by car so a 6-8 hour skate or 31 odd kilometres at an average of 3-5 kilometres per hour with plenty of hills.. but thats further down the track when i'm both more fit and confident in my ability to play chicken with traffic tends to be a fairly busy road unfortunately but learnign to not pack myself everytime a car comes head on and keep control will be a huge benefilt for when a road train and pauls milk truck comes skidding around the corner .

yeah cheers mate i'm well aware of the amount of paperwork thats going to be involved in getting both sponsors and a route sorted. I have already hit up NRMA for a map of sealed roads only but unfortunately i'm goign to have to deal with traffic no matter where i go... i will be aiming for wider roads but as you get in the NT unfortunately its slim pickings might have, to have a pick up /dropoff point to change boards for harsher conditions but i'll deal with that one when it presents itself good to have someone whos keen for a spin as well... thanks for the info on the three blokes i've sent them all emails for help and or ideas that they may have for getting me through it...

for what its worth, if you have the cash there are GPS' that cyclists use that will measure distance, altitude (gradients) heart rate etc which might be good to download periodically and to ensure you don't travel too far in the wrong direction ,)

Also be sure to post your itinerary/timetable as I'm sure there will be plenty of people happy to support you along the way (fresh food, water, showers etc ,) and maybe skate along for a while (unless its one of those solo unsupported things ,)
