Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but what is the difference between a predrift, a speed-check, and a pendy? Because I see the terms are used in similar situations and the slides can look similar.

Thanks.

pre drift is sliding your tail out with a glove down before a corner to slow down instead of footbreaking. speed check is an upright slide also called a check slide or stand up slide. pendy is a front side handslide with both hands where you let the board drift frontside to backside while in the slide, similar to the motion of a coleman
you kinda got it there sean, the pre-drift and speed checks are right but pendy is wrong....

just try and put the words into motion, a pre-drift is when you drift INTO the corner not THROUGH it, which is very trick to wrap your mind around untill you really get it dialed... the space you would normaly use to footbreak you actually start arcing your turn ever so slightly and kick the tail out to scrub speed then re-align your arc to finish off the turn.

a speed check, like sean said is when you want to just quickly rub off speed, this can sometimes be seen as a pre-drift but is used in a more wider variety. a check slide could be seen as just a normal stand up slide where the tail snaps out really quickly and comes back, slashing off a little bit of speed, hence 'speed-check'

now a pendy is when your board does a full pendulum motion, does not necessarily mean you have to use two hands, but this is used more when hitting REALLY fast turns and you wanna bush off lots and lots of speed in a short amount of time or when you wanna stop yourself. similar to the other two where the tail gets kicked out but instead of the body staying directed down the hill the board and the body swing in a pendulum motion nearly 180 and back, hence the term 'pendulum'. you would use this more when coming into a very very tight corner and needing to brush of lots of speed if your going mach 10, but the tricky part is getting it right and not throwing it all over the place and losing your line.

its kinda important that people know the different terminology between the different types of slides coz i see a lot of people saying "oh wow did you see my drift?" and im like "errmmmm buddy... dont think so, keep trying". but once the terms start to make sense and you can put them into theory then practicing these theories should be a lot easier
Jacko,

On this noob stuff, would you be able to put up a post for the first timers on your turn by turn commentary on the trip from Skyline to Conrod, and where you think these speed control techniques would be useful, or where they should be avoided, ie like in a pack comming into a tight corner.
they can figure it out for themselves. its called experience. everyone has their own style of riding and thats all part of the game, figuring it out. You dont progress in this sport by reading words on the internet, you progress by riding and gaining experience.

all i can say is: if your going too fast, then break. If your comfortable with your speed then go for it! the rest is up to you

pre-drift:

checkslide:

what have you been doing with that hellcat of yours??
maybe a combination of 'em all?
jonty i think you need to come out with the crew sometime, youll learn a few things im sure
