ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

I used to BMX and i bought a Pro-Tec Ace helmet, and when i started longboarding i thought i would just be able to use it for that too, but as i got into downhill ive started to realise that the amount the front of the helmet sticks out from your head is really annoying in tuck because i cant see past it. So i was wondering if anyone has one and come across this problem or has any ideas about how to get around it without buying a new helmet, like maybe get rid of some of the foam from the front? would it still protect my brains if i did that?

I wouldn't remove any foam from it. I'd say that would weaken it for sure. How thick is it? I cant imagine that it would be much thicker than most other lids. Maybe adjust the way you tuck?
Fin you just gonna have to stretch your neck a bit better before you go into tuck. the top of your lid should not be that near to your eyes. It is of course possible that you've just got a unique head. Is it similar to one of these?

gold...
haha dude

i had the same problem, bought one for bmx and then i start tucking and to see ahead it hurts my neck hey haha

oh well its still good
i lol'd Robbo.

Fin i used to use that helmet, until i realised that in the event of a serious head impact it would do very little in protecting my brain. basically it is a skatepark helmet and that is it. if your gonna get a new helmet, go to a bike store and find yourself a skate helmet approved for the road - look on or inside the helmet for the sticker or label with the multiple ticks certifying that the helmet meets the Australian and New Zealand standard (AS/NZS 2063).

many of the pro-tec helmets are actually not approved. from my understanding they have two styles of helmets, their Bike range and their Skate range (both look like skate helmets). unfortunately the ones you'll most often see in skate shops are their more expensive ones and they tend to look the coolest and have a pro skater's name on the side, but 95% of the time they aren't the ones that meet the AS/NZS 2063 standard.

here's a pic of the Ace helmet which i bought 3 years ago for $80 on the left and my current sixsixone helmet which i bought last year for $45 on the right.

As you can see, there is a shit load more protection in the sixsixone than there is in the Protec Ace. And you'll notice that the foam used in the sixsixone is not only double in thickness, but its hard. the protec foam squishes easily when you press it, whereas the sixsixone doesn't at all. the point of the hard foam if you didn't know (same as bike helmets) is it acts as a second skull. the protec is essentially a thin layer of padding between your skull and the outer shell, which by the way is very flexible. now i know which one i'd rather be wearing in the event of any head impact.
And look, the $45 helmet looks cooler than the $80 helmet. wow.

anyway, just thought i'd let you know all that before you get another helmet.
off topic but do tripple 8 have all the good foam or are they crap like the protecs?

I don't own a triple 8 so I don't know, but as i said "look on or inside the helmet for the sticker or label with the multiple ticks certifying that the helmet meets the Australian and New Zealand standard (AS/NZS 2063)".

if it doesn't have that sticker then its not been approved.
basically the helmets that have the stickers are bike helmets in the shape of a skate helmet. same protection, different shape. so look at your triple 8's foam and get a bike helmet and look at that. by doing that you'll know if it is the right type of foam or not.
yeah i have to get it online cause the only skate shop near me is skatebiz who have a rule of overpricing :/

theres no info on hopkin about safety specs so i might just have a hunt around the internets :)
i did say that skate shops don't tend to sell them. go to your local bike shop, if you can't find one there that you like then find another bike shop.
Leigh, my helmet has the AS/NZS 2063 sticker with the ticks, i might have a newer or older version of the Ace but mine looks more like your sixsixone regarding the foam on the inside
James, the foam at the front is 2.5cm thick, which even if i stick my neck out like a turtle still cuts out the top half of my vision
i dont have the funds for a new helmet so i guess il just have to do my best with this one, thanks for the suggestions guys
oh -_-
haha i should have read it better, ill go check out some down the road

Otherwise go to Big W.
Tick approved ones for like $20. Look as good as any of the others
