ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey i am wanting to start some photography and was wondering what the a good camera would be and lense. I am wanting to take some seriours photos so probs a SLR optic lense or something. also i do have a head mout for vid so no need for GoPro.

If you have any tips or suggestions then please comment.

I am looking for something around 0-1000 but if you could keep it under 500 that would be great.

Thanks for the help and if you live near the city (melbourne) or on the  Hurstbridge line then maybe we could have a sesh? (i do actually longboard)

P.S. any tips for editing software  and techniques would go a long way (focus and lighting)

Once again thanks for the help and hopefully i might post some pics up soon.

For photagraphy advise you should talk to a photagrapher, or camera shop.

There are some very talented photographers on here who will be happy to help but you will most likly get more answers from hacks who dont know shit.

Look at the pictures and videos posted here and when you see something you like post a coment on it asking about camera,s used and all that photography shit. Then your going to get the answers your after from someone you think has done a good job.

For that sort of money you will easy get a good quality entry level camera.

Go to Michaels Cameras (http://www.michaels.com.au/) in the city and check some of their stuff. The place is pretty pricey so I only buy small things like filters and cards there, but they do have a good range of stuff. Worth checking out.

There are also several camera shops near there too.

ok thanks guys.

My cousin is a speedway photagrapher and has some nice cameras and stuff. i could ask him.

Also i was looking at this camera, whats your opinion on it?

550d is good a good choice. you should consider buying a sony a55.

sony's arent that well known but ive been using it with no issues, and tbh, id much prefer it over my mates 600d.

if you do wanna get into longboard photography or just anything skate related, might i suggest you get a flash?

here's a link to my photography page if your keen :)

Me and my crew are very average skaters, and I'm the photographer in the crew, I just use a cheap digital camera, really you should be more worried about getting great shots rather than having a great camera. I have an average camera, but I really like taking photos of the crew and I have a skate album on my fb with 300+ photos and I've had numerous compliments saying that every photo is amazing

link us? im keen to see :)

The 3 main issues with the a55 are that 1 the HD video side of things is not quite as good as a canon in terms of control of image, your going to end up wanting to run mainly 3rd party lens's (ie sigma, tameron, zeiss, etc etc) and the a55 is not technically a SLR because there is not a mirror reflecting the image up into the eye piece, instead the eye piece is a screen that picks up the image off the sensor, how ever saying all that i have two mates who love theirs to death for video and stills and get some awesome shots with them. Personally i would say get a canon or nikkon and stick with them, if one day you decide you want to get serious with photography you can upgrade the body and not have to throw out the rest of your glass, i have shot some of my best digital stuff on a lens that came with my first Film SLR. Happy shooting mate

true, at times, the amount of lenses available really made me think about jumping ship, but the sony lineup is gradually getting there. and imo, slt are better for beginners doing video because of the continuous auto focus, which canons lack.

the constant auto focus is awesome on the sony cameras, but it does generate noise which your internal mic picks up and when you have crap audio to begin with it doesnt really help the case when you can hear the motor moving around like that

i have decided on getting a cano EOS 550d body with a sigma 18-50mm F2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM + a speedlite 430 flash

Also i am mainly using this for photos. If i wanted video i already have a digital camera that is small enough to mount on my heaad and takes HD video. Another thing about the camera, i will be using it for other photography as well so i kinda need a good camera.

Thanks for the help
