My brother is keen on a mini, and I just don't have the expertise to point him in any one direction. After a quick look at the hopshop he seems interested in Loaded Ceviche and the Ladera old school completes.

I know he isn't keen on DH, just sorta carving and cruising and maybe a bit of sliding

Has anyone got any ideas or tips for shopping around? Perhaps even some suggestions? Any input would be much appreciated.

If you want a genuine mini than look no further than this

The Cerviche is one of those boards you either love or you hate. A better all round little board is the Sector 9 Ala Moana. It can be bought as either deck only, Sector complete, or pick your own copmplete

yeah theres some info in the forum already if you search but anyway:

first decide how long of a mini he wants, mini's seem to extend to as far as something like an apex 34 or a ceviche and as small as a 19" dogtown locker board. from the 20"-30" section your not going to be doing much except pushing and kick turns if your lucky enough to have a tail.

in the longer end you have boards like the ceviche which incorporate driveway slashing with a tail.
also in the longer end you have boards like the landyachtz carbon mummy and the rayne timeline, these boards are for carving and a bit of slalom.

in between the extremes you have the infamous "Z-FLEX" genre. the 28-32" boards that have tails and that every second surfer seems to own. i have an arbor pocket rocket mini which fits in this category. they can do some standing 180's but not much in the way of carving. fun for driveway slashing and in somecases good for skateparks. if hes a carver look at stuff like the rayne timeline or the landyachtytz carbon mummy, im getting a mummy. if he likes to carve but still throw out some slashing turns check out the ceviche, i have tried one and they are awesome. if he just wants something to skate to school and have some fun on save $150 and get a sector 9 mini complete or a z-flex. out of these i would go the sector 9 way more. they are both around $200 and the sector 9 just has better components in my opinion. i had a sector 9 bambino mini set up with 70mm red zigzags that was awesome before it got stolen.

a category i havent touched on is double kicker cruisers like the joel tudor mini and possibly some sliding decks. if he is as you say, wanting to do a bit of sliding and just carve and cruise, i would be looking at the 28-34" section. anything smaller i find is too difficult to maneuver without being uncomfortable.

try and further narrow down what he wants to do, watch the videos.

youtube the following:

loaded ceviche
rayne timeline
landyachtz carbon mummy
i cant think of any other mini videos offhand that the company makes but search around.

got to silverfish for all your reviewing needs.

also what kind of area do you live in. if its a flat place i would probably be looking at definitely getting a tail just so you can have some extra fun. if its a hilly place look for something like a timeline possibly. anyway its hard to narrow down whats best without a bit more info.

goodluck picking, i find minis much more fun than longer longboards sometimes :-)

Jack Nolan.
An apex 34 is a small longboard but its not a mini, you might call it a pumper though
yeah i guess your right, it is a bit of a stretch to call 34" a mini.

sorry to hijack your thread Ro, but robbo i was wondering if you think the sec 9 alamoana runs better on the sector 9 setup with sidewinders or with paris and something like otangs
Paris and O'tangs for sure, unless your into turn back up the hill type carving. Its one of the best boards Sector 9 have made Its like a small voodoo doll with W cave
Haha no problems at all Jack, Robbo is after all "The Man" !! I mean look at that gnarly avenger custom job :D

Thanks for the input Robbo, we are swinging by the shop tomorrow anyways so he can get a hands on look at the different sorts of boards and I guess we will go from there
heres a sector 9 alamoana the decks in almost brand new condition plus some stickers and the grips got a bit or dirt on it and it comes with paris 150's

madrid bubbler, its the best for little brothers, it'll keep them spaced out and then they wont annoy you.
Haha Ian I don't think that the bubbler quite suits him. ( especially now that i know why its called the bubbler) We ended up getting a Landyachtz Carbon Mummy, with RII's and Stimulus Purps. Thanks for the help there Robbo..
