anyone tried experimenting with this
i haven't heard of it b4 and not much came up in the search function
wandering if u guys thought it would work well as a board building material?
cheers, tom

well i actually did some reaserch on this topic
(y do i have enough time on a friday evening to be researching kevlar?)
and it turns out, it has a MASSIVE difference on how the kevlar is strong depending on how it is woven
there is actually a type of kevlar (surprisingly in the same price range and not that much harder to get then standard kevlar) which uses woven nano fibers of more dense kevlar
this kevlar has a very high impact tolerance
i think i have found my answer boys
thanks for all help
cheers, tom
u could use it as a footbraking sole
they use kevlar for brake pads sooooo

bahahaha! bulletproof boat! NICE! WAIT A MINUTE!

KEVLAR! ABRASION RESISTANT! WHAT IF YOU WERE TO MAKE SOME KEVLAR SOLES!? for some shoes?

would it be worth the cost? because you don't have much extra in the way of depth on your shoes, so it's like there's nothing there, but it doesn't trash your shoes?

also, on a sidenote (sorry to stray from the topic...again) i was just wondering, would turps or metho be ok as a bearing cleaner? or should i just try and find some engine degreaser (i'm sure dad will have some somewhere)
btw i thought i shoud add this
Ballistic vests use layers of very strong fiber to "catch" and deform a bullet and spread its force over a larger portion of the vest fiber

i don't think it will be that brittle
thanks again
tom
hey tom, do you have any clue what kevlar would be like as a sole? would it have resistance? or due to it's low abrasive qualities would it just slide like a slide puck? because if it actually stopped, i think it'd be something to look into, there'd be a fair bit of money in skate soles that don't change the feel of your ride, that don't look like they're there and that are really wear resistant

B/P vests use aramid aka "kevlar" fabric woven into cloth. it has no glue holding it together. Just the sewn in weave. Kevlar is actually knife resistant. You can buy protective vest especially for that use.
Anyway getting back on topic. 100% kevlar and glue deck would weigh a ton. Heavier than a wooden deck of equal thickness. Unless you have a deep concave shape, 7 layers of kevlar are just going to bend like cardboard for a longboard deck.
Insect uses Carbon nano tube in their latest developement. They claim to have made the lightest, stiffest 40" dh deck
the thing is though kevlar actually has a higher tensile strength to volume ratio then steel so u would not need to make it just as thick as a standard board?
also the kevlar should stiffen up (like fire glass does when mixed with certain materials such as epoxy?)

Enough talk,
I gave my opinion from experience. Sounds like you're pretty keen to do it anyway.
Now go make your deck and lettuce know how she rolls. :)
haha good point
cheers, tom
