I asked some time ago how to remove shields from Biltins and took ages to find the replies again.. So I'd just thought to re-post it with Wayne's and Bernie's awesome help!

Wayne sez:

Ben,
The shields should come off, they're held in place by a really fine (bout 0.5mm) "C" clip,
look closely at the outside of the shield and you should see the C clip hiding half inside the outer race.
Its there, just hard too see, run a needle/seal pick round the inside of the outer race at the edge of the
shield and you can pick up/hook the c clip and lift/pry it out,
BE CAREFUL DONT LOSE IT
then you can take the shields off and clean them properly.
Another important thing to check is that the shield hasnt crushed/caved/bent in or it willl touch your balls!
The shields are soft and flex a bit, i reshape/reset them so they are clear of my balls.
I use couple of sockets, (or use conduit or whatevers the right size)
sit the shield upside down in the bigger one then fit a smaller one (bout 1.5mm smaller) inside,
GENTLY, read farkin GENTLY press it down to reshape it.

Bernie Said:

Ben,
Follow Bear's advice, but don't stop there, completely dismantle the bearings (on an old towel so the balls don't run away under the bench)
when you re-assemble your biltins do it in this order.
1) re-insert shields
2) put centre race in place
3) drop the balls back into the race
4) insert bearing cage
5) put in a bit of grease the size of 2 grains of rice.

Next time you want to clean you will not need to remove the shields.
and
The grease gets squished out of the way of the balls and creates a dust seal/trap between the shield and the inner race.

Trial and Terror. You stuff it up and learn for next time. Ha!
cheers man!!! helped me a hell of alot, my cruiser has biltins and i could feel the bearings were dirty as fuck and didnt go all that well anymore until i cleaned them. thanks for the guide. preeeeeeeeeeeesh!
i tried to clean my old S9 grease balls today and i couldnt see a C clip on them.. any ideas?
Some bearings are non serviceable. The shields are pressed in and not designed to be removed/replaced.
They look like this

Once they wear out you chuck em.
Avoid buying these type (608zz) if you plan to clean and maintain them. Rubber shields are the go. ie 608RS

Steven

just pull one side out, (you will wreck it but you only need one), and leave the other one in, put your solvent or whatever other cleaner you are using in a cheap spray bottle hold the bearing vertical so the fluid doesnt stay trapped in it and spray the fluid in from the open side spinning it as you spray, you will feel when they are clean
If you are just putting them in a bottle of fluid and shaking them up you still have all the crap you have washed out of them in the fluid and it can be deposited back in the bearings.

I use Lectra Clean, but mainly cause we have shit loads of it at work. if you have rubber seals you will need to find something that doesnt affect the rubber.
thanks guys but i think i'll just go get some better bearings when i go into town next. XD
dont get sucked in on expensive ones! keep the old ones cause ill clean them up for you, just givem to me when we finally get to skate together.

sure man no dramas, i'm just going to go buy some reds as theyre a hell of a lot easier to clean and only cost about.. $20-25?

and i have given them a rough clean two or three times, and suprisingly alot of stuff has come out of them even without the shields coming off, i put them through mineral terps and just keep shaking them up, let them rest until all the shit settles at the bottom of the container, and repeat 3 times. works well but even still i don't know how much crap is left inside them
This post was helpful, cheers. But my biltins have a C gap rather than a clip- a gap in the outer rim edge. I have pried off shields from this design before and found it impossible to replace them without damaging the shield. So I resorted to repeated shaking using my homemade bearing bottle (the bones copy that is on YouTube DIY style - rubber washers are the key!)
I'm trialling Castrol LMX grease in my biltins now thanks to this post. Stupid cheap lithium compound, used a syringe from chemist to apply and chopstick to carefully insert grease between the balls. Comparing this to Triflow. First bomb top speed was same but push and roll speeds slightly slower, could feel resistance - but this is still wear-in phase. I put enough grease in to fail the spin test, two decent grains of rice.
I also bought a set of ceramic VXB biltin copies from eBay which I will compare to the real thing. Will post my progress in a fortnight
