grab some buddies. go out skating. get speed. put your gloves on the ground. push out with your feet.

do that over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again untill you get it right.
Jacko's 100% right put some padding on your ass/thigh and try it on the 2nd to top floor of any comercial type car parking garage...you can get a bit of speed and its smooth concrete , just launch into it and do it over and over again , have a break let the bruises settle then do it again some more...you will still think your crap but you will be better than most of the regular skaters and ready to understand what instructional vids are around
agreed. you can't learn by just watching the videos. they are good to get an understanding of what goes where and such, but you can only make sense of it all once you do your first slide.
work on one slide (coleman is often the first slide people learn) and practice it until you figure it out. its like riding a bike, once you get it, you've got it and you will only get better from there.

the only tips we can give you is, gear up cos you WILL get roadrash and bruises, wear a helmet and COMMIT YOURSELF.
Practice makes perfect
i'd prefer to fall on the road, the concrete in parking garages is so hard you get mega bruises from that shit... skin heals in a few days.
Your best bet is to go find a nice hill to slide on. learning to slide on the flats is bullshit hard. Just go to that fuck-off steep hill you never thought you could ever skate and whack on some gloves. Spend an hour or so there with some friends and really gee each other up and by the end of the day i guarantee you will know how to slide.

Its always easier to learn shit when your mates are there trying to learn too
driveway?
thats how i got the basics down
lance is right as well
bad up, road rash hurts and if u get cut in a garage it is usually the worst cut i get thanks to the dirt :S
thats my 2 cents :D
I'd recommend a wide open space without kerbs. :(
Hey all
i'm just trying to learn to slide too and could use any tips on wheels... hardness, type whatever - as my big- lipy- grippy cruisers do let go but when they do its nasty.... need a bit more control if poss??

so true. loose trucks help too ime, especially with standups.
and as for wheels, something with a round lip makes it easier to learn, i learnt on flashbacks 81a, but if you really wanna make it easy for yourself to get the technique and stuff down get slide wheels. or learn on wet roads :D
I love to slide on wet roads its the most fun, everyone is right rounded lips, loose trucks, gloves and a good helmet and your mates laughing at you when you come off. road rash doesn't sting as much as people laughing at you.
