ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Was watching Drive with Mike Vallely on 1 HD the other night. For those that didn't see it he caught up with Lance Mountain and Tony Hawk. Mostly park skating but good to watch, good to hear skaters talking with skaters. Best thing of all though was hearing skaters talking with respect. Highly recommended and gives a good insight into the culture of the art, that developed into a sport. For any of the young guys out there, Vallely would provide a great role model with a positive outlook and a lot of respect.

i dont think mike valley is the best role model dude hes got a big temper and likes to pick fights he has calmed down a bit but tony hawks is a much better role model
Personally, i look up to and respect alot of what the guy stands for. He has always been a guy who has publicly stood his ground and stayed strong with his values, yes he ends up in fights more then someone like tony hawk. The Look at the reasons why he has ended up in fights? the most publicised one where he took on 4 guys was because they where abusing him and his friends for no apparent reason, how many guys on here would of done the exact same thing?
Mike Vallely is one of those guys who should be looked up to by kids, same as guys like Jayson Jesse and Jay adams. They came into it before there was money and just had the simple desire to go skateboarding, those guys in my oppinion are better to look up to then most footy players or other people in sport
fighting is both immature and stupid
mm i disagree fighting for no reason is stupid but fighting for something you beleive in is good. In mikes case thats skating!
Mike V is rad, stands strong. No religon bullshit, never says hes perfect, yeah he does fight a bit i think he even wresteled for a bit but he skates hard and with mad style, he was the only skater as a grom i was stoked on. opened my eyes to the fact that skating is what you want it to be and fuck what anyone else says. he does carry on a bit with ranting about being strong and believing in yourself. Ive got the drive movie but this sounds like a series? is that right?
standing your ground 100% of the time is not. If in mikes case he fights to do so then thats how he does it. I personally do not do it but i respect it

Mike V s one of my favourite skaters. His deck farmyard deck is one of the few 80's/90's decks I have hung on my wall. He was one of the links between 80's vert and 90's street. His style and attitude is extremely unique. I always thought he'd make a great longboarder, knowing Mike V he probably is an amazing longboarder. He bombs hills damn fast on that street deck.
He definitely has some inspirational stuff to say about skating and the life of skating there for everyone to experience.
If Mike V were such a douche then he'd have zero sponsorship endorsement and most likely be in jail.
Personally I reckon alot of his fighting seen on Jackass is staged and scripted anyway.
I like the guy.
So what's your opinion of Jay Adams then? Sure he's a drug fiend but the man's a living legend.
Gotor on the other hand is a complete douche.
Jay Adams is a pureist, He just wanted to go skateboarding and pay the rent for his mother, he got the raw end of the bargin with sponsors and other things in life

Yeah its on channel one HD, might just be a movie broken down into bits but when i saw the website http://www.driveskateboarding.com/ there is a link to season 2. As for the rest of the comments good to see there are so many opinions. As far as Jay goes, a man is entitled to his choices, at the end of the day if you are proud of yourself and your actions that's what counts, when all is said and done its yourself you have to live with. Personally i've done a lot of drugs, paid the price, and don't endorse it, but that doesn't make it wrong either. You can only do the best you have, with what you've got, when you've got it.

I had mates who put themselves out there as role models at the same time as being heavy into the drugs, it took me a while, in the end i realised they weren't the role models for me. But they did help at a time when i thought i had no one else, so for that i can't chip em. I guess i moved on and am happier associating with guys who can do their best without the drugs.

Really i just like the fact that these guys are talking frankly and not jive talking. Its a refreshing change from most of the skating stuff where marketing your identity is another form of comercially successful brand recognition.

I guess at the end of the day mike V is putting himself out there as a role model, i'm not sure on this, but i guess Jay isn't putting himself in the same position.

Oh as far as the fighting goes, everyone is entitled to be an angry young man at some stage in their life, if he's making up for it good on him, if he's standing up for himself good on him. I train in 5 different martial arts at different dojo's with different coaches week in week out. There is nothing wrong with fighting, only with bullying, and unjustified violence. Fighting in its proper context takes discipline, motivation, and skill, much like skating.
Almost immediately after being released, he went straight back into jail for drug charges. That was only a few yrs ago.
I still like him though.
