I was thinking of making some comfy pads for practice.  Thought I'd ask if anyone has made or tried to make any before?

Plan is to use an old wetsuit from the selvos or ebay (I'm from vic so they are thick), cut the sleve/legs for the part around the elbow/knee and put some velcro patches on there to fit some slide pucks.  might use the bit around the middle too.. protect the hips & guts.

Figure its got to be more comfortable than leathers and hopefully wont slip off the knee/elbow like some traditional pads.

Not sure how neoprene holds up to road sliding, but i'm guessing without pucks it would last about 2 seconds.

Thoughts?

The point of pads is that they provide padding. Neoprene, whilst having decent shock absorbsion, probably won't be enough to help you in a crash. Making them from a wet suit will also mean that you'll have to find a second hand one that fits you which could be hard if you don't already have one you can cut up. That and you'll need some way to stop them sliding off if you stack. Second hand stores sometimes have pads too if you look. One of the dudes here in Canberra picked up a great set of knee pads for about $6 at cash converters, so keep an eye out. For not much more cash, a lot less effort and alot more safety you'd probably be better off just getting a set of pads either new or second hand. I think early make some at a reasonable price. Hopkin or creative sk8 will certainly be able to help you out too.
I agree. Its false economy. By the time you buy the wetty, Velcro and pucks, you could have just bought pads. But if you have all the stuff lying around, give it a go...
best ive seen are made from wrestling pads they are tight and tend not to slip just add velcro grab some caps off an old set and your rockin. elbow caps are better.
personally, I wouldnt bother, not when you can pick up a set of early pads for $60.
I reckon it's a reasonable idea - you don't need much padding for downhill - what you want is the puck to slide on and save your skin. Leathers have minimal or no padding, and they work fine.
