ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

hi guys,,
from the out side looking in, there was some chat about less slalom events and riders. After having a chat to bugs and haggy, i have a suggestion...longboard slalom. The older riders who may have a longboard and who feel comfortable with that board set up then could come have a roll and also we could try to introduce the grooms who race downhill and also have a longboard to roll with. This then may introduce more riders who have a board and do not have to lay out some coin for another slalom set up and can ride and possibly just adjust what they ride right now?
We thought that it would only be a matter of setting up the cones differently and for the sake of some words and using the internet to advertise this, it may be worthwhile.
I am more than happy to poke this along and know some team palooka riders who will join in on their boats and have a roll and giggle.

Rules...min 38" deck and longer wheel base?
What do you experienced guys think?
cheers
skinny

for a slalom event that was tacked on to the end of a down hill event.

Both events are well received by longboarders.

Cones should be taken to EVERY downhill event.

Racers can then have a go, and return the favour of time-keeping and hay-bale
management, by picking up cones for the race organisers.
That way everyone gets a full day of racing, and the grins will last for many more days!

More importantly it will remove the misconception that slalom is something
that is not possible on a long-board.....and a down-hill race with a few cones
to dodge adds to the fun.

In fact I would go further and suggest that sanctioned or outlaw down-hill
events that include a slalom side-show could be made entitled to
earn premium ASRA points...say 150% increase on normal points allowances.

There needs to be a slalom side-show at Bathurst.

That way the long-boarders who are not up for the serious race, can
have a go at the racing discipline which was the original reason for ASRA.

And best of all, the organisers and volunteers can have a bit of fun
after a long and stressful day of race management.
On top of that, many of the world's fastest also enjoy slalom.

We really do need to take Slalom to the long-boarders, cause they are not going to find it by themselves.

There's been quite a bit of longboard slalom already. The biggest was at Beat the Bastard - it was 60+km/h through cones and incredibly gnarly. The other one is at the Pump Station, where it's a little flatter so the fastest way through the course is to tuck rather than stand and pump. And Rob McWhinnie's running another longboard slalom(ish) race this weekend, except it's two people on the course at the same time, drifting around the cones at 60km/h and fighting to overtake.

Because you can't pump a longboard unless you're already going fast you need a decently steep hill for longboard slalom or else riders will be dragging along at 15 km/h, which might be fun for some of the older guys, but it looks goofy to everybody else and would make slalom look ridiculous.

Good hills? The second half of the Pump Station is just right, but a bit short. I'd love to do one starting just above Forest Elbow and then down Conrod Straight. And Keira would be perfect. Basically the hills you need are the same as the ones for downhill. Which is difficult, because if you're going to do a legit event you'll get many more competitors if it's regular ole downhill, and for outlaws it's usually impossible to set up cones on a large stretch of road without it getting shut down.

If what you want is beginner slalom, where the cones are more widely spaced, then I think that's a good idea. The best way to do it is to have two courses side by side - a "proper" slalom course and a looser beginner's one. That way the beginners can see what's required and what they need to do. No need to limit it to longboards though.

any racing is good but to have GS racing and tell people they must use a regulation board is a bit hard. I think most would like a slalom of any type.

Hi dan,

sorry, but i beg to differ. It is slalom and longboard slalom. There has to be some form of regulation to class structure to classify it as a longboard. 38" may not be the size, but in my opinion thats where a longboard starts. It,s also not about bombing hills, we have to think outside the square to generate a new audience, once again, this is my opinion only.

Thanks mate

put on the race and see what happens?

Here's last year's Shred the Thread (longboard slalom):

Same thing is happening tomorrow. It's exciting to watch and race.

The only reason you would ever need to restrict people to riding a longboard would be if the course was faster to ride on a slalom board. And if the course is faster on a slalom board it will be a slow and dull course to ride on a longboard.

But hey, I'm happy to be proven wrong.

your right bugs. If a board is up to IGSA and ISSA standards and is safe why impose any new restrictions. A kid turns up on a Kmart 35" long board?

More slalom the better. Bring on any events. Dont restrict any event. Just let the event type and partisipents workout the best equipment to use.

Look at the  ditch races  and the Pumpstation,Slalom boards, pool boards. All doing well. the only thing sepperating them is they guys riding them. Good skaters can ride any board and they dont give a shit what the trend is. They ride what they are feeling suits the cource and kicks arse. Pump station has a mixture of Slalom boards and longboards on the podium as has ainslie and Kincumber. I think these are the best evens as they do include all riders. If anything the groms are put off by the older guys kicking their arses. (not me but others such as PC, Haggy and similar)

Maybe then, it,s advertises as longboard slalom to get old and new interested?

Or "Longboard Race (Short-course)" to head off preconceived misconceptions that slalom is for short-boards only.

I don't get the impression that Mischo is a slalomer. On the other hand, not many people in the world are gonna beat Jacko, Zak Maytum or Ramon Konigshausen at slalom.
