ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey guys, My mate is currently developing an application for smart phones, its is starting out quite simple with just a hill gradient and length, but he is planning on it calculating times of runs, average speed, maximum speed, distance, and an aspect where you can compare runs, add you own runs.
It is still in early stages but he is going to need skaters with gps smart phones to test the app,

He is also looking for any ideas on what he could also add to the app

Looking forward to peoples response to this to see if it is wanted in the community :)

theres a big difference between a 'game' and an 'ap that tells kids where to go skate'.

obviously if keira is such a public road and is well known world wide, why would you need an ap to find it? you said it yourself you just punch in australian world cup or something and boom there you go...

but yes back to square one, you dont want your epic spots publicized, coz you dont want kooks to ruin it. your example of 7 pins is spot on. people dont know where it is for a reason. those who do know where it is surely didnt use an ap to find it.

and answer to this discussion: This idea would be good in another country, not here... try somewhere like france or switzerland where there are so many mountain roads you actually DO need an ap to find your way around!

Everyone knows Kiera is a great place to skate already. There are hundreds of videos all over youtube of it. If you search Australian Downhill in Youtube that will be the first hill to pop up. It was also the most publicised Australian race ever held with thousands of spectators and if you are going to do that then you have to accept that people now know where this road is located. If you wanna keep a hill secret, don't hold a world cup race on it.

World cup race hills would really be the only safe option with a game like this as those spots have already been given away by the event organisers. These are also the roads that people dream of skating because it is the roads they see n all the videos. No one dreams of 7 pins (other than me) because no one knows that it exists. Where as people do dream of Mt. panorama because it is so heavily publicised and showcased.

This isnt an app to find hills though, this app is more focused on having hills data there in front of you. hell there is probably a way to get the information to come up only if your at the hill, and its not if everyhill is going to be on this, this app will heavily require user input to put the runs on this app so you can most definatly choose which hills to whack on there

as for legal issues, thank you for bringing this app. we will get advice from a solicitor and see what our options are regarding the disclaimer, as for motionx im not sure what engine he will be using, he may end up coding one himself

make me an app that just monitors me and doesnt share shit, speed, top and average and map my route so i know how far and what streets i skated so i can use the info for me..... get where im headed? i dont need to tell people where to skate just go skate, meet people and skate with em, but when i get home i want to know how far i skated, how fast and so on

How about a deck bolt on that gives gps position, speed, height, descent speed, acceration,
gyro (think slide time), altimetry?

already done by wefunk, ecept the board costs 6000

cant wait for a uni gnarvigator!

I agree. The basic features of the app (gradient, length, speed) seem like a good idea, that, if accurate enough, would be appreciated by most. However, the feature of saving specific runs to share between other app users is the feature that seems to be attracting the criticism. If the app only monitored the rider itself, and could not be shared, then this would seem to keep all parties happy

Sorry mate, Your basically designing an app that takes 50% of the fun out of longboarding. That being searching (and shredding) a new spot.

Although if worked right, it could become one amazing app.

Good luck!

I already do all this stuff, with a few different phone apps and gps units, also recon instruments has this idea already on the go, but the unit in $350.

I get what you are trying to get from the app, things like speed (average, total etc) are good things to know and when you are trying to get better they really help as what feels fast and what are fast can be quite different.

if it was more of a training tool and less of a way to find new spots and you would be better off.
