Yes, you read it right, here in Oz the #2 of 10 preproduction Wefunk Stealth Division boards complete with the Stealth Division precision trucks (soon to be available seperately) and your choice of wheels and bearings. This board can be yours for a mere $6,250.00 (normally US$8,000.00).

This is your chance to own a piece of skateboarding history.  http://www.cre8ivesk8.com.au/default.asp?PageID=54&CatID=94&...

But does it kick flip ?
;-)

Same reason Ferrari's are. It is the price the builder puts on it and that customers are willing to pay. It is built of F1 prepreg carbon which is expensive, but maybe I should see if Alex wants to come on here and answer any questions. I am just brokering for him as it was here in Oz and needs a new home. Wasn't much point sending it back to Germany then having to ship it to the States or wherever.

why is it so expensive?

thats pretty cheap

Prepreg carbon runs at $200.00 a layer, or more, and there are a shitload of layers in these boards. On top of that you have the vac bag and autoclave costings, then the cost of your core material can be even more expensive than the carbon, depending on what material you use. From a composite manufacturers point of view, these decks are masterpieces, not the normal deck you buy from a skateshop and slam into the gutter while your learning how to ride. Martins boards are the same, totally up on the next level of construction.

I might be missing something but I doubt the opinions on here are based on the photo. Peoples opinions are based entirely on the outrageously expensive price which is 20 times more expensive than every other composite board out there. The question is what is the purpose of placing a never to be sold price on a board with no explanation as to why a piece of non mechanical composite could cost that much. Adding a GPS to this costs very little in parts cost (maybe $100) maybe another $200 in labor to be generous to yourself. marked up 20 times it should retail for an extra $6,000 so $14,000 for the top model

not really the point. everyone's opinion is based on the ridiculous overkill of a skateboard. its like buying a F1 to use as an every day run around car. why don't we strap a rocket onto our skateboards or add extra trucks - becasue there is such thing as over engineering. no doubt Alex's boards are amazing, in Insul he had a wood board with carrot fibre stringers.. that was awesome and practical.

Foam core composite boards are quickly getting outdated and replaced with newer lighter wood construction. something about the feeling of wood under your feet as oppose to carbon composite board isn't as good (i ride a carbon composite board)... so it's not next generation of construction, its a higher tech old construction. but most people here already know that...

I think you missed one of the sentences in my post, Trav...

It's only overkill if you either don't understand the technology, or you don't have the money to buy a Wefunk, and wish like hell you did have the money.

"Higher tech old construction"?!?! We were using lightweight wood cores 30 years ago, Trav, so in reality construction is merely going full circle, just using a differant wood.....maybe.

Gear like this is a kind of wacky experiment, although it's not clear what the hypothesis is. It might be an attempt to see how much whizz-bang stuff they can put in a skateboard, or it might be to see if there's a sucker gullible enough to spend $8,000 on it. Or it might just be a labour of love to make something that's beautiful in the eye of the maker, regardless of how practical it is as a skateboard.

Nobody has to buy it. But it does stir up some opinions. I think it's absurdity on a stick, but I kinda like it when people push things to absurd extremes...as long as they're using their own money. For every step forward in the march of progress there's countless wacky experimenters building stupid shit in their garage, and that's a good thing.

and you missed several of my sentences, and i don't care. just voicing my opinion that it's overkill for a SKATEboard.

Don't try to start arguments me i don't care for any of your thoughts.

I wasn't starting an argument with you Trav, I was giving you information regarding composite construction and costings, thats all.

Without people making the effort to try and push the limits on construction, etc, there would be no advancements, and everything would just stay the same....boring as batshit!!!

If you try something and it doesn't work, you don't do it again....and if it does work, then you keep doing it. The big thing here is that crew ARE prepared to get off their bums and experiment, not just standing around doing nothing at all.

Just MY opinion.

stick it to him trav

on silverfish the creator was saying the material costs and hours put in to one of the prototypes, something ridiculous like 70hrs work on one board. you are getting a masterpiece of a board from a guy at the top of his game instead of a paint by numbers deck that every man and his dog is riding. I'm guessing it isn't designed to be sold to groms but to people with a fat wallet and distinguished taste. Having said that some groms spend the same amount on rims, spoilers and sound gear for their hyundai excel so go figure......

Hi guys, I really don´t understand the problem.

When I made a few runs of minicruisers, pintails (copied in the same factory now for Z-Flex, 1:1 shape clones) and simple dropthrough decks a lot of people (mainly in Europe (other manufacturers) and in the US) were bitchin about the low prices and that I would attack other brands. Now we have ONE model that is strictly limited and targeted at people who can easily afford it. It just got shot by Kenji Aoki for AmEx Blackcard Magazine (targeted at people who do have a lot of money)

But I also just introduced our new line of euro-made decks that are very competetitive pricewise. I still build the Roadmasters that sell from EURO 1000-1800.

I neither have to compare my carbon decks with any other decks (you can do that of course) nor do I have to justify the price.

It comes down to this: We (as wefunk is no longer me alone) can charge whatever we want for our decks. Some are very limited in qunatity and very expensive, others are not.

If you don´t like it, don´t buy it. If you can´t buy it, buy another deck, go out and have fun.

Cars are a nice analogy. There are racetracks where a perfectly tuned Subaru Impreza would be as fast or even faster than a Lambo Reventon. A Reventon is also ridiculously expensive and most likely I´ll never own one (and don´t want one because I don´t really like driving). Still I think it´s good to see that such cars are built just because.

I haven´t even started about the 20-24hs of work - spread over a week - that go into such a deck and that I don´t want to spend the rest of my life in my dungeonesque workshop building carbon decks just so that people can afford them at a toys price.

Let´s see it this way: The guys who can afford it and like to have it are indirectly paying the carbon decks that I build for teamriders (Lenny, Kim). That doesn´t hurt anybody but allows me to build these boards for my friends and teamriders.

One of our temriders, Stefan decided to ride factory series this season. (I most likely will also because I don´t even have a carbon deck right now.)

Check www.facebook.com/wefunkSkateboards for the new factory made decks.

I just posted the new 2012 lineup yesterday.

PS: Ado is helping me out here because we happened to have the board in Australia and I asked him to safekeep it for us or to sell it if he finds a buyer.

PPS: Saying carbon foamcores are yesterday´s hi-tech and wood feels better anyway is like saying an Mercedes S class feels better than a Lambo Reventon. True -- most likely it will be the smoother ride and will get you anywhere as fast in traffic but it is still comparing apples and pears.
