Has anyone got any experience they would like to share in constructing Bamboo decks? I'm talking type of bamboo sheet - dimesions, thickness, vert-lam, how do you approach the lay-up, etc.  I'm thinking of giving it a try.  Apart from China imports, is there a AUS distributor that is small quantity friendly?

and also Deeks, sorry to be such a pain, but because I am basically copying the Tan Tien, it will be a drop through truck, would you recomend having extra reinforcements for the neck? because if you look at it, if the board I make end up weak, it could just snap there. So i am a bit worried about that.

no probs Nat - Epoxy will be needed to bond the CF to the deck - The fibreglass will need it too - it's a 2-part, very strong "plastic" coating - like varnish but waaaay stronger (and generally thicker too).  I've never seen CF any other colour than black, and it's definitely not transparent.  Fibreglass, you will come close with the standard sort of stuff and there are some special fibreglass weaves that will go virtually transparent, but they're harder to find and generally more expensive - along the same lines as CF or kevlar for price.  I'm guessing that the guys who are puting CF inside the construction do it for strength but also to allow the natural timber characteristics to be visible on the bottom of the deck (the top's generally covered with grip, right?).

Epoxy is the best way to protect the board, top and bottom (in my opinion).

BTW, did you get the 2.0mm vert lam from Plyco..?

yep - drop thru definitely creates a weaker area in the deck - extra reinforcement is probably a good idea - I've really not bothered myself as I generally use at least 8 layers of hoop pine ply (int he drop thru's I've made so far) and I haven't snapped one yet! - some are reinforced with Fibreglass, the others with CF/Kevlar - the epoxy you use to apply the reinforcement is key - get the good stuff as it really isn't a lot more expensive if you hunt around - like i said, Carbatec aren't too bad - better than a yacht shop for example where you'll pay double!

Yeh the grip is normally at the top haha, but I am doing a pattern-type thing for the grip, so i wanted the bamboo to be visible as well. But I can picture what you are saying now with the Epoxy, and carbon fibre. I will look into the more transparent stuff. and also yes i did get the vert-lam from Plyco, birch as well :)

Cool, thanks Nat. Good luck and keep us posted!

Quick question Deeks, if you're doing a full layup like that (bamboo, timber, cf and fibreglass) would you still put it all in a vacuum bag at once? and whats to stop excess epoxy from fibreglass seeping out and ruining the bag? THanks

The pressure the vacuum bag exerts is incredible and will most likely do all of the layers at once - I've done it with hoop pine easily, but you're working with some harder timbers - if you are at all in doubt, do it in two stages - The Bag's are made of a plastic/vinyl that is resistant to epoxy - it won't stick to it permanently or damage it.  At least the Roarockit TAP bags like mine are like this - not sure what you have...

I'm also about to get a roarockit. SO you're saying theres no need for peel ply or any of that? That will make things a LOT easier...

technically you should, but I've done it without and not had a problem...

Iconic Pintail: hardwood core with bamboo on the outside faces :)

Loving your work Witch doctor - can I ask what thickness of Bamboo you are using...?

you will not need peel, perf ply and breather fabric for a timber board. All these things are for use in composite layups. All you will need is breather mesh which is a must for good even pressure around your mold.

PS Nice board Daniel!
