ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Has anyone got any experience they would like to share in constructing Bamboo decks? I'm talking type of bamboo sheet - dimesions, thickness, vert-lam, how do you approach the lay-up, etc.  I'm thinking of giving it a try.  Apart from China imports, is there a AUS distributor that is small quantity friendly?

Natalie its Deeks who used the foam and vacuum bag not me. An mdf mold is a lot of work and kinda overkill for a one off. I would recommend either the foam and vac bag or a male/female foam mold with clamps. A good instuctional video here

Hey Nat - This is similar to the tools/kit and process I use: http://ministryofwood.com/764-2/  If this is the kind of thing you're going to attempt I can give you the place to source the right foam in Melbourne and you already know where Plyco is.  You might find a bag on the ASRA marketplace...

Got a bit of Bamboo of the back of a truck going to try some dowelled vertical stave boards if all gos well will post some pics.

Cheers

Custom Boards

Sounds good Mark. Let us know how it goes. Off the back of a truck, eh...?

Thanks Deeks for the site, pretty helpful stuff there, I will look onto it and see what i'm going to do. And also Deeks, thanks for the site aswell, and if you can give me the source for the foam in melbourne, that would be awesome. Cause i reckon im gonna use foam now, its looks and sounds a lot more practical then the other ways.

board looks great man!

bamboo topmount with hardwood core, laminating carbon on it right this second

No Probs Nat - The place is in Bentleigh (near Oakleigh) - you need to order an pay over the phone via credit card as they don't do cash sales (anymore). https://secure.solidsolutions.com.au/view_products.php?cat=65

Let me know if you have any issues!

Thanks Daniel - unfortunatley it rides like shit!  not really, but it's too flexible - looks good mounted on the wall though!  lesson learnt...

hey deeks, i'm planning to order all the materials this week or so, and so far, this is what my board's got (or planning to) from the centre, iv got bamboo, then 2x birch outside the bamboo sheet then 2x woven carbon fibre sheets then 2x bamboo inbetween the 2 bamboo sheets so that the bamboo will be visible on the outside. Also a fiber glass sheet on the top, plus the resin, grip tape etc. Do you think this is a good idea for my board so that it isnt too flexible? According to some guy I talked to who works at this fibre glass/carbon fibre industry, adding in the carbon fibre will do nothing to the flex, but I am sure the tan tien has got carbon fibre sandwiched in. If you can give me any better ideas, or also think the carbon fibre is a silly idea, feel free to shoot cause i really am confused about what i am doing. and also, i was told that from the pressure of the vacuum bag, or even riding the board, the fiber glass can crack easily and worn out. I am really confused! haha. if anyone have any better ideas, feel free to say anything :)

Hey Nat - I'm struggling a little with your explanation (probably my fault, not yours)  If i read it right:

~~~~ TOP ~~~~
Fibre Glass
Bamboo x 2
CF x 2
Birch x 2
Bamboo x 1 (Centre?)
Birch x2
Bamboo x 2
~~~~ BOTTOM ~~~~

What Bamboo are you getting? - I would advise against the Ply (5 ply stuff I got) - If you can get the sinlge layer of Vert-Lam stuff, then you're going to get a MUCH better result - have a look at Adam's stuff (Skatment) - as he has used Vert-Lam bamboo with birch outer layers to great effect.

Steve of Fat Pigeon fame appears to use CF inside the construction as well - see link below (I've only used it on the outside, and usually on the bottom, not the top)

I've used Fibreglass, CF and a hybrid CF/Kevlar - I've never had any cracks and my son and I have really tried hard to break 'em!

The key in reinforcing is a GOOD epoxy - look at West systems 105 (Carbatec, Springvale) or the place I get my fabric from at the moment (Nuplex in Springvale also) have their own brand of very good epoxy

Hey Deeks, thanks for the advice, youve got some good stuff there, as in this really does help, this is my first time and had no idea there was so much into making it, i mean i did know there was quite a lot you had to consider, but not this much! anyways, to make it easier, i will set it out liek how u did :)

---------TOP---------

Fibre Glass Woven

Bamboo vert-lam 2.0mm

Carbon Fibre Woven

Birch 2.5mm

Bamboo vert lam 2.0mm

Birch 2.5mm

Carbon Fibre Woven

Bamboo vert lam 2.0mm

--------BOTTOM--------

and for the epoxy, I am a bit confused, and this might sound so silly to someone who knows a lot about this, but where do i put the epoxy? and also, what colour is the carbon fibre? and if i use a woven carbon fibre fabric on the top layer, would I be able to see the bamboo through it?

Thank,

Nat
