ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hi All, Yes I am new to this forum and I just wanted to know what part of the skate racing community ASRA represents?? Is it all skate racing, Just Slalom, Just Downhill or what?? I noticed on the events page the only events in Australia are Slalom events.
Are there any plans to hold more events that include Downhill Skateboard, Streetluge, Classicluge etc.

I understand that ASRA held Newtons Playground and have the World cup in 2009 but what is happening in the meantime for local Downhill skaters and Streetluge riders??

As I said I am new to this site I don't want to cause waves. I am just curious becuase when I signed up it asked what sport I was interested in, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Ditch, Luge or Classic Luge and yet there only seems to be Slalom events?

James, Haggy, thanks for your input and updates on what ASRA is up to! Your replies have answered a lot of questions I (and others) had in regards to the situation for future events.

"Anything is possible if people are prepared to do the work."

You've summed it up there hop, If insurance is not a problem then that's great news, it's now up to us as a community to band together and try getting things rolling locally if we want more races.

Paid membership should be a priority in my opinion, how many entrants were there at NPG? 100 and something? Im sure a yearly membership of $100 isn't too much to ask is it?

There's at least $10k towards the ASRA money box

How about adding a PDF file to download for joining ASRA as a paid member?

It's been hiding away in this spot all along. I should probably make it a bit more prominent.
Thanks every one for your input and answers. I think alot of peoples questions have been answered and it's comforting to know that the support is there for those who are thinking of planning an event.

I also agree that a membership is not out of the question.
I use to be a competitive ice skater and would pay a yearly membership fee for the National association of around $170. Then when I would enter competitions, would pay between $120- $210 just to compete.

I think over the next few months there will be alot of people looking into running events and getting more people involved!
Are we going to consider Wellington NZ ?,
I spoke to the Council a few weeks ago (I've had dealings with them before) and they gave me an extremely positive response
this is all very interesting. i agree with every point made and i think the majority of this community would too. there are a lot of riders out there that want to see the sport go somewhere in Australia, so there is already a lot of support there for ASRA. but as was said, it won't happen on its own. i think we should allocate positions for each state for a first step to help get the ball rolling. then membership should be the next step once we have sorted out each state.
the jobs involved are time consuming, so its important we all work together. i think some sort of hierarchy system or something needs to be put in place in order for things to make happen for each state.
i think something needs to be done soon if we want to see some action in this country.
Hey Hop, is there an Event Proposal (DVD+bound illustrated hardcopy) ready to present to Councils and Major Events Corperations around Australia and NZ yet, maybe if we pepper them all at once and see what response we get, some of them may start knocking on our door, not ever knowing we existed.
Maybe if we hit the respective Council and its associated State Events Corp at the same time, more impact value

An Event Proposal is one of the first things on the priority list at the moment.
I have spoken to Hop about this and approaching the state-level Events Corporations is I think a very effective approach.
I am meeting with Hop and Bugs tomorrow to nut out a few things with ASRA. This discussion has focused the issues and I thank you all for your input.

I think we need a few key things sorted out going forward to grow the sport in Oz.

One - A clear marketing approach (ie, create a proper Event Proposal, etc) that can be used in pitching sponsors, councils, and Event corps. Provision of resources to people who are organising races around Oz.

Two - ASRA Leadership and Hierarchy: As Leigh mentions above, we need to put in place a relatively clear hierarchy so that people know who to speak to about particular issues. also, this will ensure we avoid repeating work other people have already done, saving time and energy. Regional representatives that take charge of organising events in their own backyard would clearly be a great thing.

Keep the ideas and issues coming. It's great to have this discussion.

Pat - OK - lets do Wellington!
haggy, not sure if you guys are aware...but go to this link
http://www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants/isep.asp
up to $75,000 available for international events held in nsw which are sanctioned by an international body and auspiced by a non profit association in australia...worth a shot i reckon
and if a nsw state body can get off the ground underneath asra the nsw body can apply for a $5000 grant in order to "stabilse the organisation through administration cost grant"
happy to do any of the above as it is what i do...we just need to sweep under the carpet "will adhere to international anti doping code"!!
Cool Haggy just need to start a dialog with a proposal (eg;DVD) of what we do and have done(Bathurst) and start the ball rolling in the land of mountains, think it would be a good move as we have only one NZ Standup(Eddie) and one Luger in Wellington that I know of.
NZ has much easier PublicLiability laws, WCC fell over themselves tryin to make us happy when we raced there last.

This was posted on Gravity Stunts tonight and has been bandied around some forums over the last few days:

"Hi guys I don't know if this has been talked about much here but the subject of bring all the Gravity Racing disciplines under one roof is being mooted on other forums. This is my suggestion I posted on www.lugeaustralia.com and wwwsoutherntasbillycart.com. Please feel free to copy and post to other furums in our great nation. If anyone knows of a wingsuit forum please post this there. The bigger this organisation becomes the more sway we will have with the Federal Government etc.

I was talking this subject thru with a friend at the Hobart Hot Rod Show today and came up with an idea aimed at finding a way to form this nb.
I have spoken with a lot of people who all agree we need a national body. So we're pretty well got a majority ok?
Here's one of the things I came up with;

If each 'arm' or 'group' selects a person(s) to represent their interests then those selected chip in by whatever means and they start a new site called AGRA AUSTRALIAN GRAVITY RACERS ASSOCIATION (just using whats been suggested) then those persons get together on the new Forum and conduct Meetings and chat amongst themselves on 'live' Forum with the rest of Oz watching on. Then when it comes to question or comments time the ones watching can put forward their question or suggestion aimed at the Chairperson or their Rep or they can direct their question to another of the reps.

So before you reply to this have a good think about what you will say and picture how we can improve on what I've suggested. I'm looking to take the next baby step............trikesTrikes,"

This was my response. I think someone from ASRA needs to get involved in this discussion and set the record straight as to where ASRA stands.

I have been following this push across the forums for a while now.

My personal view is that the more bodies we have the less impact each will have and the more chance of infighting. We have a national body (ASRA) which has the interests of ALL skateboard-style sports at heart. If any evidence of this is needed, just look at Newtons. If we fragment ourselves then we will become inconsequential when approaching government, sponsors, etc.

I believe we should ALL work with ASRA and put all our enery into ensuring this organisation succeeds and flourishes. As Hop has said, they have event insurance, they have sponsors, they are working on an event proposal kit. Rather than trying to duplicate what ASRA has done lets use the energy to arrange events and keep the Newtons ball rolling.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Cheers
